I have a home network that consists of a linksys router connected to a cable modem, 2 PCs and a Wii connected wirelessly to the router and one pc connected directly to the router with a cable.

The cabled pc is in an extension and is next to an Xbox 360 that I want to add to the network. I was just going to connect the existing cable into a hub and then connect the Xbox and the PC to that, but I have been told by a few people that hubs are rubbish and will slow down a 100baset network due to collisions. Is this true and in that case what should I buy to do the job?

You're probably thinking about switches and calling them hubs, they're different. A hub transmits data to every port, while a switch directs data to the relevant port. Switches used to be expensive while hubs were cheap, now switches are cheap and you don't see many hubs being sold. You want a switch.
