So, I bought a personalized number plate and have received my certificate of Entitlement (V750).

I'm reading from this page, but I'm unsure about what I need regarding documents.

There is a lot of information regarding transferring a number plate from 1 car to another, and putting your own plate on a brand new car, but I'm unsure about what I need to do to just put it on a current car.

Is it just this form (PDF) I need to fill in and which sections?

GAH. So much ****** paperwork!

I think i took my MOT V5 logbook and the V750 down to my local DVLA office, they gave me a new MOT and a form to get the plates made up.

You can put the new plate on the car the same day.

My new log book arrived a week later.

What about all the other paperwork that it says about? I doubt they'd do it with just an MOT and ya V750? :(

Also the plates have already been printed and dispatched, got them elsewhere :)

V5,Tax disc, the form, mot. You can que in the dvla for around 3 hours and wait for documents to come back or send them by post. I recommend the former.

Ok thanks. 1 last question: On the website it also states that I need to provide an insurance certificate when posting it all off? Is this the case if I go to the DVLA or not? I don't really wanna drive half hour to get there, queue forever and then find out I don't have everything :(

I forgot the tax disc, they want that too or a photo copy if its been issued a while.

You dont need the insurance certificate, why dont you phone them if you are concerned.

It says it all quite clearly on the back of the V750 im sure it does, Fox on here explained it to me at the time cos im a bit thick :)

This is really easy.

Take your MOT certificate, your tax disc, your V5 and the V750 to the DVLA local office. They will send your V5 away, print you a new MOT certificate and provide you with a replacement tax disc. They will also give you a certificate of authority to get number plates made up.

Then you can go to a plate supplier and get some plates, and once you've phoned your insurer to notify them, put the new plates on the car.

I went by train to the DVLA office because technically you are uninsured once the transfer goes through until you call the insurer.

It is better to go though i think rather than in the post, so you know exactly when its done, am i right in thinking that, ie so you aint driving about in some sort of limbo if it is your main car?

I was in and out in less than an hour the last 2 times as well, its not even a big wait.

Yeah I just took all my docs to the DVLA office & they printed me out new ones & said I need to put the new plates on as soon as possible, she just laughed when I advised I'd already put them on that morning.

Thanks for the input guys. It seems the insurance certificate is only needed when the car is untaxed? I think! Anyway, will pop down to the DVLA on Monday if possible and get it all sorted :)

As already mentioned, don't forget to tell the insurance company the new number.

Then a few days later you'll get a letter stating there is an inconsistencey between the reg plate in the policy and details held by DVLA. As long as the reg is correct you can ignore his letter as DVLA data is slow to update.

The reason I was asking all the questions regarding providing an insurance certificate is because the car isn't actually insured at the moment, so providing one would be rather difficult! I've got it off the road (insurance-wise, still taxed) for 2 weeks and just wanted to get the plates sorted before it's insured again :)

How does this work if you post your documents? At what point are you technically uninsured? I have no ketchup but I thought there was a seven day crossover for your plates to be made up?

They send another document out to you saying exactly which date and time it officially switches over :)
