Hi there, first of all i should say i'm a noob when it comes to hi-fi equipment so bear with me on this one..

I have just received a blu-ray player for my birthday which i am very pleased about however, it has HDMI output however.

My question to you all is what type of unit do i need to buy that i can connect to the blu ray player via HDMI cable, that i can also plug my 5:1 speakers/sub into.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Edit: The blu ray player is panasonic DMP-BD75 if this helps

What you need very much depends on the 5.1 speakers/sub that you own. Is your 5.1 system a home cinema kit or some PC speakers..... Give us a make and model and we will be able to advise further.

They are from an old DVD home cinema system, not PC speakers (they are flying leads as opposed to composite/3.5mm jack)

Pioneer XV-DV232 to be precise.

Do the speakers hook up to the xv dv232 with normal speaker wire?
How about the sub, does it use an RCA cable?

Sorry by flying leads i mean 2 single cores, with their insulation bonded together. They actually have some fairly specific looking connectors on them.

I will inevitably need to be remove these in order to fit connectors into the back of the new unit (whatever that may be)

Sub is the same as the speakers, no RCA involved i'm afraid

From what I've read your old dvd player was an all in one system, so if you wish to carry on using the speakers that came with it you'll need to pick up a multi channel amplifier.

Thats assuming I've understood what you want to achieve.

That's correct.

Specifically one with HDMI input to take audio from blu ray source and output it to my 5 pioneer speakers and sub...

Any ideas?

Both good suggestions. Thanks
@gitbags, I'm not sure where I said that but I think you're right, I think it's driven from the dv232 unit.
I'd rather keep the cost down and utilise my old speakers if possible but I won't totally write off your suggestion of a whole new set up! :)

yes either a mains cable or a second cable that took power straight from the receiver. Or at a push one multi cored cable. i.e. 4 pins 2 for signal in and 2 for power.

As I thought, well this info is all useful, I now know what I'm looking out for.
Luckily there is a branch of the previously linked audio retailer in Bristol which I'm close to :)

I dont think you will get a better system (unless you go second hand) than the one gitbags has posted to above. It will also be an improvement on your current system.

I agree Mark M.
The fact that it's HDMI and not SCART makes it an instant winner!
Not about to rush out and buy as I'm just researching at the moment. So thanks to all who have commented, the info you have provided has been helpful!
Cheers :)

The magic of blu ray is more in the sound that in the picture.

the more you invest the better the experience - not just cash time learning how to setup a system properly as well.

if your not bothered just hook the blu ray up to your TV and use the inbuilt tv sound - thats pants by comparison to what you can get

If you want a system that will do a blu ray some justice then inevitably you will have to invest some money - my advice would be buy seperate items rather than all in one kits as you are limited to upgrading / selling on in the future.

get on what hifi and look at reviews of the lower end kit to get you going - pioneer amps are generally the kings, however some prefer onkyo / yamaha - speakers you cant go wrong with monitor audio - they will munch any speakers you get as part of sets from pioneer / onkyo / sony etc

something like the Vector 5.1, or Radius - you will then need to buy an amp and speaker cables so you are looking at approx £500 - £700 but that will give you a proper enrty level system that will sound like its worth the money.

I am bothered, and 2 channel sound is sacrilege, might aswell listen through some apple headphones! Hence this thread and my inclination towards a decent quality bit of hifi kit :P

Thanks for those suggestions though EllisDJ,

I like the idea of separate components, i dislike the non-generic connectors on things like my pioneer dvd/all in one set up.
