What do mods do?

This is a general question, and doesn't relate to this particular forum.

On another forum I frequent, there is an opinion that mods don't do much, merely sit back and wait for RTM's. My response is as follows:-

Although I don't know precisely what a mod does, I imagine it involves far more than just sitting waiting for an RTM.

I imagine that they have to trawl through every thread (presumably having certain mods in charge of certain sections) on the lookout for spam, trolling, abuse, illegalities (links and so on), swearing, libellous comments, off topic posts in serious threads etc etc etc. The list goes on and on.

I for one wouldn't want to do it and I have every respect for someone who does.

Although the forum in question has a swear filter and allows hotlinking (which presumably reduces some moderating time), I still think that a lot of work must go into the moderation of a popular form.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,

Jon.

Moderators don't do anything at all :p

/me runs to the darkest corner of the forums and hides

I think they do it more on rtm;s and just what they see as they go about the place, don't think they deliberately look for trouble.

Yeah I would like to know what they do apart from RTM's as I am looking to set up a forum for work use and I will be one of the admins for that.

Hopefully won't be too much work in the inital stages as a) most of the people at work are noobs and won't know how it all works and b) they will only have access between 12-2 initially.

I guess I have answered one... Writing out FAQs and training. :p

What's an RTM? ;)
It is a good question though. Being a mod seems like fun to me :D The power, the fame, the ability to write *** without stars ( f t w)
Do they get paid? Where is the office?

Do they REALLY exist :o ? :p

Weird thread.:p

And no, generally they don't plough through every thread on the forum, that would get old very quickly. :D
