What do people think of the prius + hybrid?

So my dad's after a new car and seems to have set his sights on a prius+ 7 seater hybrid. Looking at autotrader they seem to be around 12k for a 2012/2013 model.

My question is, are they any good and are there better options? He wants it specifically for the fact it is hybrid and it is 7 seats so he can shove in large things for transport. He is also going to use it for a 40 minute commute. I've tried to convince him to keep his 1998 golf for odd jobs and get a nice car to drive but he just doesn't care about having a nice driving experience or fast car.

They are decent but don't expect amazing fuel economy.
If his use-case involves a decent run at speed with town driving at either end then they are great. Silent in the towns and charge the battery on the run. On a long run however they are just a reasonably efficient petrol engine though.
Careful that the milage is fully documented. There are loads of these as ex-taxis.

I'd think that 99.99% of 7 seater prius will have been a taxi in a previous life before they are clocked back in to normal circulation.

True story - they were meant to be called the Toyata Pious.

We had a look at one.
Spacious, and being a Toyota, probably very reliable.
Unfortunately, I find the interior just a little too "compromised" on it's quality.
