What do people want to achieve from being rude?

The pandemic has made people ruder. I can see no positive benefit from being rude to others, especially towards shop and customer service staff.

It just:
. Makes shop workers upset
. Makes other customers upset, if abusive language and physical contact
. You don't get the full attention
. Other customers wait longer to be served as have to work around their rudeness
. You may get refused to be served
. You may be asked to leave which could turn into a ban, if the language and physical contact is extreme
. People are leaving retail (I want to) and no one wants to work in retail due to the rudeness - that's one factor anyway.

Myself and other colleagues are on anti depressants thanks to rudeness. We do have some lovely customers and sadly, are a dying breed. Heard of a handful of lovely customers dying in the past 9 months. If every single customer was lovely and pleasant, my job will be so much better.

If people get a buzz from upsetting shop workers, then there's something bloody wrong with them.'

Somethings are beyond our control such as we didn't decide how many self scans my store has. Its based on average transaction value. Getting kids after school buying sweets after school brings that down plus customers who come in just to buy a newspaper.

Some people are scum plain and simple, that's never going to change. Ideally shops would take a no nonsense approach and just outright ban people like that.
Everyone needs to work in retail. Get called up in a similar fashion to jury service. Get told when and where to do this. If doesn’t change their attitudes, nothing will.

For real though and as asked in your other threads, why not look for alternative non-customer facing employment?

Taking anti-depressants because of customers at work just seems backwards to me.
Problem is that I have a lot of medical issues at the moment. If change jobs and need time off work for medical reasons- I will be paid SSP for the first 1-2 year’s employment at my new employer.

That's the internet's fault.
My store allowed just 46 in the first lockdown. Worked out two per aisle, back wall and 4 at tills.

Then went to 116.

Had two colleagues- one on door and one by lifts from underground car park. Walkie talkies and communicating between the two. To see how many we had queuing then let them down.

Bloody exhausting and demoralising work especially seeing empty shelves.

We had to have a queue from the lifts as have disabled customers (not all had to shield) couldn’t use the stairs plus lifts go straight into the store.

I had a customer returning three items on two receipts. One of the items was faulty so had to do a separate refund. So three refunds.

Customer behind serving customer became irate. I said I’m almost done. He threw a tirade of insults, which I recorded on my colleague worn camera. I said if you carry on like that, I refuse to
serve you. Manager got the phone call which happens when a worn camera is activated. He immediately asked the man to leave and don’t come back,

BTW we have many colleagues off on annual leave as it’s Easter. My other two kiosk trained colleagues were on break and meeting with a manager.

The man turned up at the wrong time. He has no patience.
