Hi, I have a £500 budget and I want to be able to play the latest games such as crysis, cod4, etc.

I already have hard drives, dvdrw, tft, soundcard, etc.

Would all the above be good enough or is there anything I can get that would be better?

I posted a topic about a few weeks ago about upgrading and someone told me to wait till the new gfx cards are released, have they been released?

buying a "garanteed overclock" chip is a waste of time. they are the samre as a normal chip, only they cost more. As well as that, a dual core will be better than a quad for gaming, due to faster clockspeeds.

the new ati 4850 costs not much more than an 8800GT, and is better.

That's probably what I'd buy, using some of the parts that you already have spec'd but picking some other better choices such as the Quad and the graphics card.

I would get a his/sapphire card as the powercolor ones are noisy and the fan can not be controlled.(thats the case with the 3800's think it is still the same).

That is not a modular powersupply if thats something that bothers you

Ok, nice spec would that be the best cpu in the long run? I'm gonna keep this pc for around 3 years, I mean ive kept my current one for at least that long if not longer (with gfx card updates sometimes).

I would prefer modular for sure, which psu would you recommend?

It's not the greatest time to get a new machine with Nehalem getting closer, they are due Q1 next year from what I'm aware and they are going to be far better than the current line of duo's and quads and they are going to use a new socket type so you can't use the same board for Nehalem. The system above is close to the best for your money, but depending on what you already have now you might just want to get the graphics card which will last for a couple of years quite easily and get the cpu/motherboard/ram upgrade in 8 months.

Corsair HX520 or Corsair HX620W, they are fantastic PSU's, they are just rather expensive but you do get what you pay for in this instance. The 620w version would be better for you if you are keeping that system for that long, but it is a good chunk more expensive.

Nice system, but I wouldn't bother with the Tuniq if he's not planning on overclocking, the stock cooler will be sufficient.

hmm, thats made me think now. :(

My current pc is P4 3.0ghz, x800 xtpe, 2gb ram. I really cant play some of the games that I want to such as crysis, bioshock, mass effect.

On the other hand if my system will be obsolete in a year and new games released next year wont run very good then that will be very annoying..

You could just get a really budget system but still get that 4850 and PSU which will carry on into your new Nehalem system. That system will we've spec'd above will still no doubt runs games well next year - it's just you could have something even better from Intel for probably the same money if you waited 8 months that'll last you far longer.

Like I say though, you could opt for a budget system with the expensive PSU and graphics card which you can carry to the new system in 8 months, and just flog the other parts that you aren't keeping (or maybe even keep them for a HTPC!). Something like:

It would say you a good chunk of cash, you could still easily play all the games that are already out and everything for the remainder of this year without any problems and then carry the bits of that you want to keep when you rebuild.

Just an option anway.

Flibby's spec is a point to consider, but I'd probably put a 4870 in it, then put a 4870X2 in it at a later date :D
