my mate works with around 10 women he is 27yrs old and described me the following issues below he is constantly having at work he has been there for a year, is a happy go lucky bloke, has a great personality and is as normal as they come and was really great to be around when we worked with 200ppl in the same office in central london a year ago, he got on with everyone and never had a bad word to say about anyway..

now he faces the below

a) your colleagues withhold vital work related information from you
b) do not include you in their team when you do most if not all the work
c) are rude (but try and cover it up sarcastically)
d) do not thank you for doing duties your not supposed to do i.e. fixing server when your a sales manager whilst the I.T. manager sits there lol etc

why do people behave like this? what do they get from it?

how do you deal with these / this type of person?

pls advise

Tell him to work to contract, then he can get the IT managers job when she gets fired by the sounds of it.

People that behave him this are usually insecure in their position. So they feel the need to build themselves up by pushing others down. Or they are insecure about themselves, so they gang together to belittle someone, distracting others from their inadequacies. Same mentality as you get in the playground.

Alternatively your mate is just obnoxious, so they want to minimise contact with them. But normally it's just people being bullies.

there is no HR dept or dept manager its a smallish firm...

the owner is just as obnoxious..

trouble is he really loves his job, but the people are getting on his nerves big time..

he said its like working with jekyll and hyde...one min they love him to bits then next they refuse to accept his existence lol...i feel for the bloke, he is close to packing it in...

fair play to him he has tried for a year but its getting worse he says..

a) roll one off in their toilet (onto the seat) each time they withhold information from you

b) refuse to do the work because you aint in the team.

c) start belching into the person's face each time you think they have been rude to you.

d) Simple: dont fix the server!!!

Sounds like he is being walked all over by 10 women... hes getting NO respect at all.

He needs to MAN up BIG time :)

well they are women....lol...nature of the beast :D is he flirting properly with them all? He should be. That way catfighting amonst them for his attention will rise but you have to accept that they are their own little buddy group and because he is a man he wont be included in this.

agreed peter...

i think they are bullies, he said if were a bloke he would have smacked him by now...

agreed surfer trouble is whenever he says "im not doing it" they ignore him all day - thats bang out of order hey

Next time fix it but be reluctant and all the while keep saying "im a sales manager blah blah.."

and make an utter bosh of it. Bugger it up totally... they'll never ask him to fix it again. They cant blame him because its not his job is it.

But really is it all women? Remember women like men to fix things for them. ;) I think a few of the women fancy him...hence why they love him one minute and ignore him the next. They try to get his attention and when he doesnt respond to the flirting they go all stony and ignore him (they're thinking maybe the silent treatment will get his attention)

They might feel threatened by his abilities and prospects of doing well.

Or they are getting annoyed that he keeps overstepping his boundaries and doing every one elses work when he doesn't have to.

Is it an office purely made up of women?

If it is I reckon they are being sexist, and becuase of the treatment of women in the past think it's ok to treat somone who had nothing to do with said treatment badly.

^ quite possibly! your mates in there!

Id get him to mention a gangbang at the next meeting.

yep its purely women...

he has knowledge of I.T. therefore helps because he has a "can do" attitude..

I emailed him this thread and he said its soo true that they are jealous and insecure but he's too modest to think anything else..

unfortunately 9 of them are married they are all his age or similar ages though...

just a shame I told him to get out A.S.A.P and find a job with "nice" people...

thanks peeps you all helped him lots especially confirming his thoughts, hopefully he can see it a lot clearly now :)

Yep, straight to HR

[edit]In that case, leave - citing the reasons listed above

exactly

This is one of the reasons why i'm so loathe to work with small companies. You quite often come in to find the employees are already in little groups that you're not always welcome in.

That combined with the fact that if you dont see eye to eye with your boss he's going to give you hell. I've worked for small business' before.

Never again. For me to work somewhere, the company has to be at least big enough to have a HR dept, so that idiotic and incompetant department managers are held accountable, and dont just have an easy life because the only one above them is the company owner who they're friends with.

what a coincidence, the same age as you ;) :D

Seriously though, just leave the job, as Gilly said.

There's a bajillion sales manager jobs out there, you may as well have one with a team you enjoy working with.
