What do you do when you cant sleep?

Does anyone else get woken by birds first thing? Not the female or custard variety.. the feathered kind :p

We have seagulls, loads of the bloody things which call all night, so you can't have the window open as its too noisy, so you get really hot then you can't sleep anyway. A shot gun is what I need.
 
I've never subscribed to this white noise idea and tried it a few times, the other day I became quite sleepy listening to DI vocal trance... Put me in a trance if you will.

There's this one bird that sits on the roof just above our room that tweets for hours.. When I go out.. it looks at me.. as if it going to kill me.. and I think how I'd love to catch it first.. It's become an obsession :/ me and this bird

I get bouts of really bad insomnia every now and then since I was 17. Usually stress brings it on - a huge no-no at night is purging your thoughts as this will keep you awake. Last night was difficult to sleep due to the heat - but no where near as bad as it has been. If you're trying to sleep and can't, there's nothing you really can do but wait it out. It's easily one of the worst things to endure. As Freefaller has said though: it's much, much better to read then to sit on the computer or watch television. Personally, I hate sleeping pills as they don't always (if insomnia is bad) knock me out and instead I drift in and out of a semi-state which just leaves you both confused and drained.

I cannot stress this enough though: a routine is one of the best remedies. Go to sleep at a regular time, avoid any electrical equipment minus soft lighting and read until you pass out. It works a treat, especially if - as I found - the book tends to be very technical. :p

If you know you're not going to sleep, sometimes you need to just throw in the towel, throw on a film and prepare for a crappy day. Make it to 8pm though, and your body tends to reset itself.

Or lie in bed and play SolFree Baker's Dozen, although that does tend to rile me if I can't do it.
 
Its amazing what you can find on the internet when you are bored, but the only thing about coming online when you cant sleep is you wake up even more...
 
I usually go on here or lurk around on facebook until I get bored enough to be sleepy. Also I started writing a diary type thing of whatever is on my mind, helps me to relax. Also it's occasionally quite nice to just lie awake thinking.
 
Used to watch QVC until sleepy (always worked), now i just browse (or listen to music) on the laptop in bed with earphones on until it starts sounding dead loud then i know i'm about to fall asleepl.
