Hi all

Just curious to know what people use to encode movies with these days, im looking to backup some of my older classic movies that i cant bare to lose. I have been using dvdfab to rip the actual dvd but not to sure what to use to encode to avi or divx etc. Someone did mention divx author to me never used it before though

Hope you might be able to help me out

many thanks

WinX HD Video Converter and MediaShow Expresso. The former is a pay for app BUT MyDigital Life have featured various give-aways of the pay for version (still works) so go have a pew on there and get it as it's very good and makes use of multiple cores.

I made a related thread about this not long ago. I already knew about Handbrake but I wanted the best settings to shrink the size of DVDs without losing the quality.

Have a look at it here. :)

Thanks for that mate, i have just encoded 1 dvd on normal and i must say the quality seems really good at 800mb, i might give the high profile encode ago and see if there is any visual difference.

Is mp4 generally better quality the standard xvid avi? Streaming mp4 to my xbox does seem to look a little crisper than the avi files i have done

Staxrip is my tool of choice. But as you already have dvdfab, you could use that too to encode to whatever format you wish.
