What do you make of this graphics move?

I'm currently running a 4870x2 along with a Dell 30" 3007WFP and although it has been fantastic to use, I'm thinking of swapping out to a Nvidia 285/295 and the Samsung 120Hz 22" 3D Vision.

I'm still undecided about this, but here's the reasons for the move:

1) I find 3D stuff fascinating so I'm very interested to check out this side of things. I will be playing games mostly in 2D though.
2) I won't need to spend any more money. In theory the proceeds from selling the old kit should cover the new kit.
3) In future I'll not need to invest nearly as much in GFX horsepower to push 2560x1600.
4) And perhaps the biggest factor here is that I'll see much better response times (14ms-->5ms) and much less ghosting with 120Hz. Although these haven't been severe enough to hamper my enjoyment of the Dell (which I've has for 3.5 years now) I think I'm probably missing out big time on the improvements that have been made in this area. I also play FPS games regularly and I hate the loss in fidelity when looking around.

But of course we have the downsides:

1) Significant loss of screen estate going from 30" to 22".
2) Much lower res.
3) Probably a lot of lost value in selling the Dell. Got it for £1k 3.5 years ago and I would probably get £500 ish for it if I'm lucky. A new one (granted would be a newer model) would be around £1k.

What are peoples thoughts on this? A part of me is telling me I'm mad:)
It's a shame there's no 24"/1900x1200 120Hz option available because that would be a nice compromise.

No way would I make that move :p

Regarding the monitor... How can you go from 30" back to 22"?! I have a 30" at home and my 22" at work feels very small and limited in comparison.

As for the video card; with the new ATI cards to be announced in 3 weeks (and probably available a couple of weeks afterwards) I wouldn't consider changing up now. But if you DO go to a 22" screen, then I would consider a dual-GPU to be a bit of a waste. A GTX285 should be sufficient.

You're probably right - I'd only end up regretting it. Really wanted to try out the 3D stuff though:)
I'll leave it as just a background idea for now and keep an eye out for bigger 120Hz models in the future.

customPC benchies showed that 3d cuts FPS by half so res drop may be required. TBH I think it would be worth it but only if you could try before you buy sorta thing. Also heard that 3d can make you feel slightly nautious.

Don't do it although 3D would be nice but what you have now is even nicer than Nvida sunglasses :P

Years back, around Q3 time I had a set of those shutter glasses and a fast graphics card (geforce 4 or tnt2 ultra or something) and a good CRT. I used it (3D) for about 2-3 hours in total, it was a nice effect but a bit gimmicky.

I had some of those old nv shutterglasses from back in the day along with a big CRT which did great refresh rates and resolutions but they were pretty gimmicky. Wouldn't spend more than £30 doing it - I certainly wouldn't change GPU and from 30"->22" just to get it! (even if it is free)
