Got an RAC mechanic to check a car I was thinking of buying and one of the "advisable repairs" mentions the following:

Dampers (condition/leaks) - Light misting on left front damper, but still within MOT minimal standards.

What does this mean? Will it eventually need fixing?

If it is leaking, then yes. But it is a straight forward job, and the damper won't cost much, unless something a bit more upmarket. What car is it?

Budget for the front 2, never replace them as a single unit its false economy and generally just not great for the balance of the car.

About 300 is the Max I'd expect to pay for 2 fronts replaced - unless its got the fancy suspension

Guess I will have to ask for a full dealer service before agreeing to anything else. MOT was almost a year ago so who knows what could have happened in the meantime.

Careful, it can be serviced at a dealer and have none of the defects fixed. Going to the other extreme the dealer will often pick up incredibly mi or faults - not that this is your problem mind you.

I would get him to fix it or renegotiate the price to account for it.
Last prchase, got all the things fixed, service and new MOT and 5% discount, he gave me the reciept he paid from the main dealer for £600 as he delivered the car.

If it is a C5 with Hydractive suspension (It is hydraulic not air suspension) does it even HAVE dampers? My Xantia never did - it had suspension spheres instead?

I can't see any listing for dampers so I think you are right.

Sounds like an 'expert' service you got there. I'd be asking for a refund if he couldnt spot that the car he was inspecting didn't actually have dampers.
