What do you miss about PC Gaming?

Hi all,

I guess after reading the 'what happened to clans' thread it inspired me to post this.
For some reason, and I can't put my finger on what it is, the 'specialness' of playing a PC game has almost left me :(

Here are a few things I miss, feel free to add any of your own;

Buying a cardboard full size game from a shop which comes with a well-written manual.

Associating patches with 'extra features' rather then 'bug fixes' or something that makes the game start.

Makers actually encouraging user generated content by providing the tools needed rather then frowning on it any making it almost impossible to do.

Applications like 'the all seeing eye' for ease of finding multi-player games.

Gameplay over graphics.

The community. There was nothing better than logging into your favourite forum and talking with likeminded people. Teamspeak and Ventrilo nights had fun written all over them.

Most of the close-knit communities I was a part of have died and it's quite sad. I hardly play games anymore and just browse the web, post a little on two or three forums and that's about it.

What I miss about PC gaming - actually games - there seems to be a distinct lack of variety atm

Gameplay over 'l33t omgigawd 200fps GRAPHIX!!11', which everyone seems to want nowadays just to show off their already outdated GPU's.

Oh and...These, minus the cookie. Always good for reading on the bog.

I miss the exclusivity and sense of individuality that used to come with it. These days almost everything is a console port. Sometimes I feel I should just buy a console, but then I did that and wasn't happy with it.

There's definitely a special something missing these days.

Graphics cards that came in a box the size of a suitcase:D

Just games like half life 2 really. Crysis was probably the last game that felt like a PC game to me.

+1

Also,

Tons of games being developed purely for the PC rather than all 3 platforms

Lan parties aren't what they used to be, now they are willy waving competitions rather than enjoyable get-to-gethers.

Complete user control - I don't like the fact that we are giving more and more control of the games we supposedly own back to the digital publishers/developers likely to the point of us not owning the game, but paying a one time fee to play the game they own.

PC being held in high regards and as a main target rather than an afterthought.

Innovation that isn't just indie games, but title of the year games. Now we just have rehashed and relabelled ideas/themes over and over.

Yeah, this was what I was getting at. Regardless of how games are put together these days it's been ages since I've played one that feels like a PC game. Even Left4Dead feels notably consolified.

Games are getting written for consoles imo. Dragon Age should have been PC based but to me it feels like a console port and if bioware have moved over to the darkside what does the future hold?

I suppose consoles have improved more raapidly and seem to be coming out more competitively. With MS, Sony and Nintendo all releaseing hardware instead of just Sega and Nintendo like the old days.

Actually the All Seeing Eye is about all I can think of right now.
Maybe the fact that the top level QW clan scene isn't quite what it used to be 5 years ago too.

In general, PC gaming is the best it's ever been, as we have more powerful hardware to play all the old games on, plus some new games, coupled with cheaper pricing, digital distribution, faster internet connections and so forth.

Gaming before the PS3/Xbox 360 came about. :(

yeah, now we seem to be limited by them, and the games seem to be designed with them in mind rather than the better PC platform that got gaming started anyway, well the way we know it.

the only game genre that don't seem to be affected by these damm 4 year old things is simulators, IL2, lock on, train/railway sims, and RTS, drving games seem less affected also, mainly becasue they would have to be up against the consoles exclusive games, which are great games, in their own right
