AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 940 Black Edition 3.0GHz (Socket AM2+) -

Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant Power Supply

Samsung SpinPoint F1 640GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD642JJ)

Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (No PSU)

Crucial 3GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz (3x1GB) Triple Channel Kit

Pioneer DVR-216DBK 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM

This all equates to £550, and I can stretch no further than £200 more.
Now this is excluding a GPU. My needs are for video editing and multimedia, so I obviously don't want to spend £200 if I'm not going to be doing much gaming, but I'll need a fairly substantial GPU as I'll be using two large monitors in dual setup. So maybe a 4850 and a CPU cooler?

Tbh I'm not sure? What should I do with my remaining £200?

from the looks of the mobo its ddr3 DUAL channel not triple channel.

i'd have a look at the Asus M3A78 Pro AMD 780G (Socket AM2+) and ddr2 memory.

what size monitors and resolution u likely to game at ?

Yes I have sorted the error of my ways and I now know that this mobo won't work with a Phenom II 940.

I'll be using a 22" and a 19" hooked up together. Not much gaming but if there is it'll be at 1680 x 1050 and high end games such as crysis etc.

wont work......

AM3 is backward compatable however am2+ cpu will not fit into an am3 mobo due to 2 extra pins also there is no ddr3 controller on am2+ cpus thus wont work ether.

Tbh get an am2+ mobo & drr2 its much cheaper & has the same real world performance

If you're going AM3 grab yourself the X3 720 BE, save yourself £80 and still game at the same FPS as the 940 (which isn't AM3 compatible anyway). :)
