What do you think of...........

A bit of wood below the throttle pedal, so you can't floor it but instead so it's limited to lets say 50% throttle ?

Or a clip on the throttle cable so it can't go further ? My dad did this once to become more economical so it's impossible to floor it, and it worked.

The clutch cable's normally over time dry out, which means that they stiffen up.

I can appreciate how a 1.4 clio can be percieved as fast by non car people, sister had one, it was 'quick' compared to the 1.6 mondeo we had afterwoods:eek:

Not everyone is an enthusiast.

What on earth, how can a car be too fast for someone? If they don't like driving fast then dont press the damned accelerator so much. How utterly bizarre

Do you have a mum? Mine has a 1.6 Fiesta and it "runs away with her". You need to think like a 50-something year old woman who has just passed her driving test if you want to understand.

That Fiesta looks nasty, a step down from a Clio IMO. If she's unhappy with the pedal arrangement it sounds like she wants something bigger with more room in the drivers footwell. How about an Escort? Should be possible for the budget.

She's just driven my diesel ZX and got on much better with it (Thank god!!) so i think another one of those could be on the cards.

As for getting her off the roads, would YOU like to be her taxi for the next 30 years :)? It's taken me a year to convince her she needs to get back ON the bloody roads!

This of course means that the fiesta idea has bitten the dust

Then she is officially strange, as the clutch in a Citroen XUTD powered car really is notoriously stiff.

It's not a turbo.

I have driven both and the clio is stiffer, so it's probably worth doing the cable and waiting till she can afford £800+ for a good Saxo or 106.

Precisely! Add to that a lack of confidence in her own driving ability and you will see my problem. The car needs to be as A1 as possible and cheapish.

It is pretty stiff if not routed correctly. You can also buy a soft pedal conversion for less than £25 if you dont mind doing a bit of work.

I've got a Mum. Her car doesn't 'run away with her'. It has 200bhp.

Your mum rocks! To be fair though, mine has only down ~1500 miles in the 3 years since passing her test. She's probably a lot safer than I was after 1500miles.

I find myself agreeing with bobert50. Why doesn't she get an automatic? The only downside I can see is that she might find it hard going back to a manual. Yes autoboxes in small cars of that era are horrific but if she finds a 1.4 Clio "too fast" I doubt it will be a problem.
