Hi Guys.

Just wondered what common opinion was on this spec for my upgrades that I am ordering

WHAT I AM COMING FROM:

Asus P5E3 Premium
Q6700 Core2 (Quad) 2.66GHz
Asus 8800 Ultra
4GB (2x2 Matched) OCZ ReaperX DDR3 1333MHz

GOING TO:

Asus Sabertooth P67 1155
i7 2600K 3.4GHz
Asus ATI HD6950 Direct CU
12GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz

The only thing I really wasnt sure on was the RAM. I considered the Dominator GHX but apart from the cooling I didnt see much difference and given the fact I have a pretty cooled system I didnt think it worth it, but I am still in doubt over the RAM, however I dont want to spend silly money.

The oreder hasnt been shipped yet, so it is possible I may still be able to sub it if I call today.

What do you guys think?

Aww boo the order was sent out half an hour ago.

Is it worth me sending the RAM back and changing it?

Ive done a bit more digging and reviews seem mixed. It would appear with a bit of fiddling around the performance can be stepped up a fair bit without causing any problems. I think I am even more undecided on it after reading reviews though.

Yes, the RAM is a bit overkill i if you are gaming then you will need AT MOST 8GB usally 4GB, yer mobo looks fine do you need a i7? what will the pc be used for? nice choise of GPU by the way.

RAM:

Get the RAM, put it in the system and test it, if you like it you keep it, if not send it back, theres no point sending somthing that you havnt got your hands on yet back.

It will be a gaming rig but I tend to only upgrade every 3-4 years, so I need it to be a bit futureproof. Most of the reviews on the RAM have said dont bother with more than 6GB, BUT that the 12GB will futureproof you somewhat and the cost isnt that much different (about £40 more). My current spec I did 3 years ago and is still pretty decent because I went for top end at the time.

Its not so much the cost of having the extra RAM, rather the quality of it. It seems there are a lot of mixed opinions on how good this RAM is. I know its not top end as far as speeds / latency goes, but as long as it will do the job then thats whats important.

Will see what its like once it arrives I guess.

The timings on that XMS3 are 9-9-9-24, which is the same as the Vengeance.

Do you know what voltage that XMS3 runs at as standard? The Vengeance is 1.5 giving scope to increase performance by increasing to 1.65v which is what attracted me in the first instance.

I found this looking around:
they are rated to run at 1.65v

Hi there,

I would not suggest going for that 12GB kit - that is a triple channel kit meant for X58 boards. If you install it in a dual channel board like a P67 it will most likely default down to single channel mode (bad times). Instead, the 8GB (2x4GB) kit linked by Freddie589 is excellent and will be more than enough for a gaming system for some time to come (modern games can't use more than 4GB). Also, RAM with massive heatsinks can be a big problem when you install large aftermarket CPU cooler.s

Also, for gaming the i7 2600K doesn't really offer any performance improvements over the i5 2500K but costs a fair chunk more. Have a look at this review and keep in mind that the 2600K has a slightly higher stock clockspeed (but the multipliers on both chips are unlocked, so this is easily rectified).

Also, I would strongly suggest looking at this graphics card instead of the 6950. Just make sure your PSU is at least 650W and good quality.

I had not reaslised that about the tri-channel - Just re-read the spec on the board and indeed it is dual channel recommended. Thanks for pointing it out.

Will have to send that back then. At least I can get an order in today for something else.

All sandybridge boards and duel channel and all socket 1366 are tri

If you have a large cpu cooler the Vengeance may not fit anyway as the heatsink makes them huge. Stack two sticks of normal ram on top of each other and you will get a good idea of the size of the Vengeance.

Is there any advantage of going for the Dominator over the XMS3?

I can put 16GB (yes overkill) of the XMS3 in for £10 more than the 12GB of the Vengeance with the current offer at OCUK. The cost of the dominator is higher, but as far as I can see it is the same memory (same CAS timings, same clock speed) with a different heat sink?

The main benefits of the dominator are thus-

- they look cooler
- they can overclock better

but mainly the first one.

As for overclocking RAM, if you look at this review you will see that with 1600MHz Dual channel RAM in a P67 board you really don't need to clock it anywhere past the rated settings.

May I ask what make and model PSU you are using?

Im going with the XMS3, but going to be silly and go for 16GB since its only a tenner more. You only live once.

Full refund on the other stuff too, so all is good. Be interesting to see if the rest of the gear comes saturday or Tuesday. I am thinking Tuesday (not ordered on OcUK). So will probs end up with the RAM before the rest of it now!
