What do you think?

After spending waaaaayyyyyy!!!! to much time over the last week reading up on all the latest technology I finally hit the buy button on a load of new kit. I was going with the new Q6600 and P35 but ended up paying that bit extra for the Q9550 and P45. So what do you think? I do intend to overclock this at some point, though not sure on what coolers etc. I'll need a new graphics card too but this isn't for gaming (360 will do that).

1 x Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB)
1 x Asus P5Q DELUXE S/L socket LGA775 motherboard
1 x Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU
2 x OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 (OCZ2G8004GK)
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKS)
1 x Antec Three Hundred Gamers case

And err 1 x Sharkoon Silent Eagle 1000 120mm Fan - 3/4 Pin as someone said it was best to have an additional fan to draw air in on the Antec 300.

I've also got a few other SATA drives I'll be installing and a PATA DVD/RW.

Any comments much appreciated :)

Anyone? A lad I used to work with as suggested that the 6400 RAM won't be good enough for overclocking with the Q9550? Is that right I thought the 6400 would have been OK. If I was to overclock it wouldn't be pushing the boundaries, prob only 3.2 or 3.5GHz...Thanks

Thanks everyone.

I don't know anything about modular PSU's! TBH hadn't even heard of them! Are they much more or terms of bang per buck so to speak?

I run a lot of virtualisation and quite a bit of trading software, so other than day to day that's what it'l be used for. I've tried to future proof it too as read that 45nm was in % terms faster and runs cooler, that's why I went for the Q9550. Does my comment about memeory make sense or is the RAM fine?

Will be the odd bit of HD video once I sort a graphics card out. Always gone Nvidia but now looking at Ati once I get on terms with which of their cards are better than others. Nvidia has a nice table, ATi don't even seem to show the specs!

Ahh I see now! :) Cheers, yes that would make much more sense. I'll see if I can change the order, though it may be too late now. Only £15 in it.

Well I got it changed! :) Though at a cost :(

I ordered everything on Wednesday night through OC and had the 6% off. Prob was the CPU was classed as b-grade (yes a risk I know but...) anyway turns out they can't find it and that's why my order wasn't shipped. They've now confirmed they don't have it so I had to buy the full price one but they have given me free shipping for Saturday as an apology. I can't have the 6% off the full price one though as "there is no way to overide the system as the promotion has finished". So at least I got shipping free but as I changed the PSU too, I lost the 6% on that as well.

So just to spend some more money I bought a rounded IDE cable for my DVD drive and a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Now I've read they can be a pain to fit on the P5Q deluxe - hopefully it won't be too bad after all this and will keep the Q9550 nice and cool :)

I will change the DVD drive at some point to SATA but it's only a few months old as my last one died and my current rig only has IDE. Yes I could have change dit now but its another £20.

Ask what first? If they had the b-grade proc in stock? I would have but it was half 10 at night and I needed to buy it all then before the 6% ended.

Yeah sorry that makes more sense and yes I should have asked first!

Having one of those weeks so just rushed into it really as wanted it for the weekend (only free weekend for a while) and as I had spent so much time reading up on stuff I confused the hell out of myself!

But got there in the end and reckon it should be a pretty mint system even if I have spent a few more quid than I needed to. Roll on tomorrow :) Thanks everyone!

This modular PSU better be worth it ;)

Cool - will have a butchers. Will let you know how it goes too, quite looking forward to building it all now, haven't built my own rig from scratch for 6 years! :D Let alone try and overclock one!

Hey! Well it's all up and running :) Had some fun with the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro. Had to install "vertically" rather than horizontally as it wouldn't fit due to the heatpipes on the MOBO and was VERY fiddily to clip into the board. The heat is now drawn upwards rather than to the back but that isn't a problem as the Antec Three Hundred case has a extraction fan on the top as well.

Vista blue screened on first install!! Joy! LOL! Took 4 attempts - each time getting a little bit further and hung on the first "performance test". But now it flies!! Literally!! :)

It hits 5.9 on CPU and RAM and 5 on the DISK - I'm gussing that cos I'm not using Raptor disks?

GPU wise I'm running a PCI Nvidia Quadro NVS280 64MB, so it only scores 2.

Any thoughts on what GPU would be best to get? I'm not playing games but I want to be fairly future proof. High Def movies is a must. I run 4 monitors so I was thinking of getting 2 ATI's (3850) for crossfire but now I'm thinking perhaps a 8800GT for main use and another "baby" Nvidia card for the other 2 monitors (I've always had Nvidia previously). I know these can go SLi though due to the board. I'm guessing SLI / Crossfire is only beneficial to gamers anyway?

I think the card has a dual monitor capability built it so it can one different resolutions on each etc. Not if you have to run them in crossfire mode though, would have thought you didn't as I have multiple cards in now that aren't SLI or crossfire.

I was looking at 3850 or 8800 to save cash really. 4850 seems a more expensive route to go if I just want multiple monitors and not for games - unless someone can say why it would be better to get them now rather than later...?

OK the 4670 card seems to be the way to go - only £60 and better than the 3850. Have set up a thread in "graphics cards" about whether its best to have latest technology or plump with slightly older but kick arse 8800GT?
