Hi

Im thinking of building a new system. I've looked , researched and picked what i think is probaly best for gaming and general use for the money. Please let me know what you think and if i can go for anything else. Also will a 550 watt psu be enough for this.

XFX ATI Radeon HD 4850 "XXX Edition" 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz Black Edition (Socket AM3) - Retail
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD 770 (Socket AM3) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
OCZ Platinum AMD Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel (OCZ3P1600LVAM4GK)

Total £294.96 (all from overclockers)

Im alos buying a new monitor lg 22",

LG Electronics 22" W2261V 2ms HDMI DVI FULL HD LCD TFT £156.15 (from ****)

please let me know what you think. Thanks and I appreciate your comments.

Is £300 your budget? It's a sound spec, but if you're going to be playing modern games you might want a graphics card with a bit more oomph for a good experience on the 22" monitor. Swapping it for a 4870 or even a 4890 would probably be worthwhile.

As for the 550W PSU, it really depends on the make. If it's a decent 550W then it'll be fine; if it's a generic one then scrap it.

Full hd means higher res, which is probably good but your 4850 wont like much. The rest of the spec looks good, you can save some money using ddr2 with a am2+ board but the processor is almost certainly the one you want. #

You've forgotten case, hard drive, optical drive. Everyone on here is going to agree with Mattus on the psu, they are most definitely not all created equal and a rubbish 550W one will be cheap, but apt to explode and kill the rest of the computer rendering it rather more expensive than it first seems.

When on earth do you sleep Matt?

When on earth do you sleep Matt?

Normally when I shouldn't be :p Uni holidays, so my bedtime has crept forward as it tends to. Been on here too much lately out of boredom... need to get on with some proper work, but getting back to early starts is gonna be unpleasant!

Check out the reviews for the antec neo 550W. good price and battles above its wattage! If not check the Be Quiet 650w very good for the price.

Thanks all for your comments, much appreciated.

I've got a good quality PSU so i dont really have a worry there. At the moment i have a 500gb sata 2 hd which will do for the time being (i hope). I've got a aero cool case, its big and has 3 80mm fans and a big 120mm fan, psu sits at bottom of case.

I really like the monitor so i think your are all correct in saying i should get 4870 but ive heard that they can get hot. I think il go for the xfx version. Should it then cope with gaming in a high res ( eg Pro Evo). Im running xp 64 bit edition and the desktop will not be on the net.

And i know i shouldnt really ask but what are your thoughts on getting bits shipped from the US. I know its cheaper but is it really worth it.

Would appreciate your comments Thanks all.

These will enchance your gaming issues on a 22", the after market cooler will cool down the card better and reduces the noise. Standard stock fan can be very loud.

XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £145.98 inc VAT
Akasa AK-VC03-BLUV Vortexx NEO VGA Cooler £11.49 inc VAT

If you buy the parts from the US then maybe you will have to pay import tax on them??... maybe someone else has info on this!?...

Looks a good spec to me - can you afford to go up to the 720be and udp4 mobo...!!!
