just going to press they order button on this,i realy wont the i7 setup but cant justifi they extra cost will this do for some time mainly a gaming rig.was thinking of adding a 4870x2 instead

I'd personally go with 720be ... and save yourself some cash. Mobo would go for this -

GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P, stick in some OCZ memory with that 4890 gpu (go with the asus version as cooling is nice) and you'll be good.
 
opt for the asus 4890s the oc value ones cooler will be less efficeint compared to the newer asus dual fan set up

and +1 for the pll x3 720BE

only 70ish quid over your op to go i7. Overkill for gaming but surely more longevity? Agree the difference is as big as some believe at stock (920) but when clocked. . .
 
i used they extra dosh for the graphic card as if i went i7 i would have had to get a less powerfull card.and when a new amd chip come,s out hopfully i wont have to change my mobo again.
 
Fristly that cpu cooler isent am3 compaitable, so pick another I would advise the scythe muguen II for phenom II'S

Secondly a 4890 with stock cooling sounds like a hair dryer

The best 4890 is the "1GB Sapphire HD 4890 Vapor-X" followed by the "Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4890 PCS"
every review I have read had slammed the asus cooler so dont bother with it.

Now as the others have said go for a cheaper mobo & a 720be or go I7 just dont sit in the middle.

Because for the sake of £57 you could have :

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4890 PCS+

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366)

Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel

Total : £607.89

And thats with a faster cpu, more ram & a better grapics card.
Now ofc thats with the cpu using stock cooling but ofc you could get the Noctura if you want.
 
4870 X2 is better than the 4890 and cooler will be fine as it is a bundle deal????

i7 with an 4870x2 is 730£

where i have spent £580 on a phenom setup with 4870x2 not as fast i admit but still good enough.

But if he goes 720be route he will save more cash vs the 17 920..

And the OP DID say he wanted to play games - the i7 is only a fps quicker for gaming - not that the human eye can tell the difference between a few fps!!...
