Good afternoon,

I am looking to start a build that will give me ultra settings for all games at 1080 but will leave me room for expansion to 4k. I have listed out my components so far below.

I have a SDD and HDD. I also have a SuperFlower Amazon 450W "80 Plus Bronze" Power Supply but I am guessing this will not be man enough for the new system.

CPU-i5-6600k
MOBO- asrock FATAL1TY Z170 GAMING K4
GPU-Asus ROG STRIX adcanced GTX1080
RAM- Kingston hyper x 2400mhz 16gb
PSU- antec 600w
CASE- H440 red black

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I have around £1300 to spend.

Thanks

Bowser

A decent 450W PSU should cope fine as the new GPU's are a lot more efficient than the older models, although it may be worth getting a new one if you're tempted to SLI another card in the future. Only thing I would change is the RAM: Stay at 16GB but go for either 3000MHz or 3200MHz as it will add a few extra FPS for very little extra cash.

Edit: Don't forget you'll need a cooler for the CPU :)

OJ46 - Thank you for the speedy response.

What do you think of the below?

C/w my 450w psu
120gb ssd
1tb hdd

Would I need any additional fans?

No problem. Looks pretty bang on from here, only thing I would add is if you're open to using a different make of motherboard there are a couple of bundle deals to choose from using the 6600k CPU. Not massive savings but every little... :)

Edit: Case comes with 3 x 120mm intake fans and a 140mm rear exhaust fan, so that should provide plenty of cooling.

Thank you again. I will look into the bundles.

Ah right I see. I may just use the 450 I have until I do upgrade to 2 cards...

Do you think 450w will be sufficient for now with my current components?

If it's a good quality 450w, and even then it's pushing it, especially if overclocking.

Edit: Superflower amazon is a decent psu, should be all right.

If the GPU and CPU were both 100% maxed out on all cores at exactly the same time, you'd still have over 100W spare for everything else. More than enough imho.

It doesn't have 450w on the 12v rail though. I do wish people would look things up before saying it will be fine. It is a quad 12v rail design with a maximum of 396w across the four 12v rails. They also came out in 2008 so are getting on a bit now. I would want a much better and newer psu than that. A quality 500-550w unit if staying single card, 750-850w if going SLI in the future.

If you're spending that sort of budget and putting in a lovely GTX 1080, don't skimp on other things and hamstring the build.

Specifically, don't skimp on the PSU and SSD. A 450W PSU is borderline for such a build, get 550W or 650W for single GPU, 750W if you plan to SLI.

120GB SSD is too small. You'll fill it up in no time (just a handful of games will do this) and end up regretting it. Consider 250GB as a minimum.

I second the PSU . I had to go from a 450w up to a 650w, just to ensure there was enough juice when maxed out.
Hell, if you have the cash, you may as well go for 650w and take the safe option imo.

Thanks again for all the advise guys. Unfortunately I have another question...

With regards to a monitor. I will at some point go sli with rig however if I buy a 27" 4k monitor now how will 1440p gaming look on it as I think the GTX 1080 will struggle with some of the newer titles on 4k and I will need to play them at 1440p to maintain a decent FPS.

Thoughts?

The answer to this will vary depending on the 4k monitor you have in mind. Some handle rescaling better than others. Probably best to ask in the monitors section.

Personally I don't think 4k gaming is fully viable yet for newer titles unless you're throwing a lot of money at it (eg 1080 SLI or 1080 Ti). It needs at least another generation of GPUs to get there and even then it won't be particularly mainstream.

Also, at 27" you'll find that 4k resolution is going to result in some very small text, menus and icons which you are going to need to scale. Different apps and games scale differently, so it all depends what you're planning to run. 1440p is still the sweet spot for 27".

Something else to consider is 1440p superwide. This would give you a great immersive gaming experience and a single GTX 1080 should handle it well.

It depends on how many programs are intended. My main system now has 86gb free on the OS drive (240gb) and that is a machine that has been used by a few accounts since Z87 and 840 pro's came out. No need to stick games on the OS drive.

If soley gaming, there is just as much chance of the 1tb storage drive filling up before the 120gb if storage is managed properly.

A couple of machines in here have 120gb ssd's with storage drives. No issues if managed.

Regarding 4k, that was an area I was also looking at, decided 1440 is where I will aim with a single 1070 (did not think the small percentage increase with the 1080 was worth the outlay), re-evaluate later. Truth is, not enough games benefit from sli or crossfire, not all do it without bugs or issues, I would love to just add another 1070 in sli when I want to go 4k, but by then there will most likely be another GPU platform rendering this generation as paperweights to frown upon. But what is the point when the majority of games benefit from a single GPU.

Thank you for all your help guys. I decided on the build below c/w a new 960gb ssd.

I managed to put it all together the weekend, my cable management needs a lot of work but for my first complete build I am very happy with it. Thanks again.
