Thinking of getting a new GPU and 4k monitor this year. In case of games unable to game at 4k. What does 1440p look like on a 4k monitor? Does it look better than 1080p on a 1080p monitor?

This is what confuses me. It's all very well someone jumping into 4K blind, not really understanding what they're getting in to and just believing the marketing hype... but you actually seem to be aware and prepared for the reality that it won't run games as well as you wantl! And you're right to be concerned, it probably will struggle with certain AAA games if you try maxing everything out, and 1440p won't look as good on 4K as it would on a dedicated 1440p monitor, and ESPECIALLY not as good as it would look on 21:9 1440p. Why exactly are you looking to go 4K?

Primarily because for games I can only run at 1080p it will hopefully scale well. But equally, I want to watch youtube videos in 4K. Use my GoPro in 4K and basically "enjoy" 4K content. (netflix / amazon) possibly too.

If it were purely for gaming I would go 1440p. But it's not, I want other 4K experiences too.

ahhh so u want 4k video.

I'd think about getting a 4kTV for those uses personally.

I'm currently torn between 21:9 and 16:10/9@144hz. I've decided against a 4k monitor because at 60hz, the monitors just aren't that future proofed. By the time 4k becomes viable, at frame rates acceptable enough, we'll have moved on a whole lot technology wise.

I would very much concur with Aron... a 4K TV excels in all the other areas you want a 4K monitor for, excluding gaming. Buying a 4K monitor ONLY for gaming actually makes more sense in a paradoxical kind of way, even though I wouldn't recommend it.

I run 2560x1440 on my 4k tv when the pc is using it, i quite like the look; It gives a sort of aliased smoothed image that slightly thickens text and makes it more readable to me.

But I would want to game on it also. so dont want 30Hz TV. I cant use my TV to watch youtube because the wife will be watching TV.
