What does a new model PS3 mean for prices?

Ok, so PS3's are selling out all over the place. But what does this mean for those of us looking to get one in the near future?

I appreciate this will all be speculation but there are a few clued up people on here who might be able to make some educated guesses....

  • Is it merely an improved (cheaper) way of manufacturing a 40gig?
  • If so will it be a price drop?
  • Is it the 80 gig?
  • If so will it entirely replace the 40 gig?
  • Is an 80 gig likely to be significantly more expensive than the current 40 gig?
  • Of course, how likely is backwards compatability?

Any answers, or indeed relevant questions, then fire away :)

I wouldn't expect a price drop until the start of Q4.
(Do we really need another thread on this subject? considering anything anyone says is only going to be speculation. You could have easily asked this in the other threads)

Why the price drop then? Simply for xmas sales or do you have a source?

Wasn't going to hijack someone elses thread with half a dozen questions of my own, so yeah, we did.

I have my suspicions that the 40gig will drop to £230 sometime in the not-too-distant future, my reasoning for this is the accidental price drop to that level on a well known competitor website. I reckon they have the new pricing ready to go but someone accidentally clicked the apply button too early :)

Whether this is because of a new model or just a new manufacturing method is anyones guess.

If they were going to introduce a new model so soon I'm surprised that there was no mention of it at the Playstation day at the start of the month. With the Metal Gear Bundle confirmed to be 40gb and a SixAxis it could be they've been holding out sending new stock until the bundle is ready to go - as its likely to be a big system seller.

As for price of an 80gb/BC model should it appear over the summer I'd hazard a guess that it would cost more than £299, which would put a lot of people off as most don't want to pay over £299. Whats more likly is a 40gb equivalent but with a large hard disc for the same £299.

Out of interest, does Japan have an 80gb/BC model or are they like us with just the 40gb one now? If Japan doesn't have one either then I'd say the chances of us getting it are not overly high.

I saw something today that said (I'm paraphrasing here) "PS3&360 price drops due for Holiday season" something like that. TBH I'd be surprised if the 360 did drop in price though, and yeah it's probably just 'cos its expected for Xmas sales.

Fairy snuff :)

As a games console compared to 360 the ps3 is expensive, but it has a blu ray drive so with that its cheap for what it is.

It sholdnt cost loads more to put an 80gb in it, the price of technology will have decreased since they agreed to buy the 40gb hard drives.

Now they have got more market share compared to when they introduced the 40gb model, it would be right timing to introduce a 80gb with bc, for the play tv and more psn store downloads. They could have multiple models for their lineup.

If they did a 80gb with dualshock 3 and backwards comp. i would def buy one for 300 quid, becuase of play tv, improving psn store, and blu ray.

Whats wrong with creating threads? Its a forum after all :p

Sony has a team working on getting backwards compatibility back in via software. So it is very likely that everyone benefits - Sony will because they no longer have to manufacture the backwards compatibility hardware for the PS3, and the consumer because they don't have to pay as much, and don't have to worry about which system plays what and which system doesn't.

The PS3's pricing is only going one way - and that's down. All while the featureset is growing in richness and versatility down the road (Play TV, Home, universal backwards compatibility, etc)
