Why are intel CPUs sooooo much more expensive than AMD
is there something they do better or something that the AMD cant do?

The top of the range Intel CPUs are generally a bit faster than the top of the range AMD CPUs but when you get below that and look at the price/performance ratio for systems (CPU, Motherboard & RAM) of the same price range then AMD is nearly always the winner.

Yeah couldn't agree more, the very top end of Intel CPUs are faster, but when looking for mid-range systems for gaming etc the bang-for-buck AMD will take you a bit further.

Intel : Hyper threading, turbo boost, tri-channel. Better IPC, more expensive.

AMD : Cheaper, bargain 6 cores, run cooler, Turbo Core (similar to turbo boost), Bulldozer procesors allegedly compatible with AM3 sockets.

Thanks for all the replies guys

however,

no one has yet come up with a valid reason why Intels pound for pound actually cost more.I know its aleays been like this and I have always accepted it but now I am starting to question why exactly.

Because Intel cores are more efficient?

TBH, apart from Core i5 dual cores, some old processors and really a few overall plus range of high-end from Intel that costs a lot more for 1x/2x/3x multi, all the CPUs on the market have their place for specific customers and they're priced accordingly. Are you comparing any processors in particular?

Intel chips can overclock over 1GHz on air

AMD's usually can't

That is a valid reason for an above average user to buy one.
Most PC users don't know about overclocking therefore not a valid reason for Intel to charge more.

I have alway used AMD in the past apart from the last system I built I was reccomended to get an E2160 because they clock well, (from 1.8 to 3.0Ghz on stock cooler without really messing with too many settings) purely because I want best bang for buck.

intel have more recognition due to more ad campaigns... OEMs seem to prefer them as well, whether it is because of that, or the other way around IDK
