What does everyone do with the old pc builds

I'm currently pulling together a new build and something popped into my mind. What does everyone else do with their old machines?

Do you strip them down and sell the parts? Donate to a friend? Keep for spares (that likely never get used).

With more and more cases now having lots of glass, if you sell on, how do you ship (assuming you haven't kept the box).

Personally, I try to find it a new home and not keep old parts laying around. This time around, I may try and ebay every part worth selling that won't go into the new build. Trying to not end up with loads of spare parts laying around that gather dust but don't get used.

I donate all my old parts to my childrens PCs. My son is an avid gamer and will be getting my 6800 for his PC when I get a new gpu and he will be getting this monitor when I get a new one. I do not upgrade every generation so do not have too many spare parts laying around so not that big a deal. It is always handy to have an old gpus around to help test systems with , I have an AMD 4850 I can just plug in to test with and I am glad I kept it.

My last pc a 2500K with 8GB ram ended up on the rubbish tip :o that was in 2017 too, it was a 6 year old pc. When i upgrade from the 1 i have now (7700K), which i will soon, i'll sell it for parts or a complete system minus gpu. Idc even if i get next to nothing for it, i hope it gives someone some use.

My old x2 opteron s939 rig is likely being 'binned' soon to make space more than anything else... not like I use it these days, although I do still like the sugo sg01 case it's in.
My old i7 4790k... currently setup as a 'backup' pc but I'm debating over an unraid server using it or completely new parts....

Anything that doesn't end up as a hand me down gets sold mostly components motherboard, cpu, ram, gpu the larger pieces i.e. case well thats basically valueless unless something like a Lian Li so that goes to the tip, monitors are hard to shift no-one wants a used monitor apparently they don't to risk dead pixels and they're big and bulky and expensive to ship so usually just end up gathering dust in storage

Whilst there are people here who may have old parts they do not need then consider donating it to charity.

We may think it is rubbish but others are not as lucky so if there is a project near you then it is an option.

I always sell on my older stuff. Recently I've been buying a lot of used parts and building working systems, just to have something hardware-y going on. Usually sell these on for cost, but a couple of times they've replaced older computers for friends/family.

Only exception is a 5th gen NUC which nobody seems to want to buy, so it lives in it's box in a cupboard.

Recycling facility. My old system was about 7 years old and the motherboard died. I was sure the components were okay and they were.. I sold them on eBay and someone is using 32GB RAM and an i7 6700k processor just fine. Video card I was using on my new system, but I just upgraded and sold it.

I posted two 27" monitors on Facebook 1080p (one 120hz) and a full articulating monitor arm. I listed them for $30 bucks if anyone locally needed it. The mount along was worth that. Some dude contacted me, and turns out I deliver parts to the place he is at, so I went by when I had a delivery that way. He was going to tip me for delivering to him, but I said no need.

It’s surprising what older hardware can sell for especially on eBay. Particularly older high end motherboards or last of the socket/top end CPU’s.

People still regularly sell 4790ks for about £90 and motherboards for £100+!
