What does it take to beat two old 8C cpus?

I'm badly out of touch with hardware! Currently using sandy bridge tech, 2x8 core at 2.6ghz. 128gb ram. It runs pretty much flat out while I'm working.

Just the cpu / motherboard / ram. What single socket system will outclass the above? Mostly interested in the cpu as that's my bottleneck, until the system starts paging anyway.

If it'll take a newer xeon box to make a difference then I still know enough to spec one. Haven't over clocked since a i7 920 :)

Hey Jon (a welcome blast from the past) :)

Haven't over clocked since a i7 920 :)

I still remember your efforts.

Imagining your needs, as has already been mentioned, you'll probably want to wait for Threadripper or the INTEL equivalent flavour; after they've finished wiping their spilt daiquiris from their reclined leather seats.

You've chosen to dip your toe in the water again at a very fortuitous time. I think you 'just' missed the last time AMD gave INTEL a reason to sit up and look at their ledgers and rejig their price structure. It's interesting times :)

/Off topic:

Without spilling your whole life since college how are you? I imagined/hoped that your career would take you wherever you wanted to go once you had graduated, you certainly have the acumen.

I always envisaged you in a job where you could eventually stop using your own oven/hob to heat up devices to test their tolerances - loved that thread.

Regardless, genuinely, great to read you're still about - I've only just recently reappeared myself - don't feel you have to respond in detail, or even at all, to the above (kinda put you on the spot, apologies). It's just that I imagined you in a 'Q -like' basement, once you left Uni, torture testing all that the engineering world had to offer. :D

With your current hardware at 100% you seem to be putting your skills to good use...

Hey Plec. It's been a long time. I did indeed miss Ryzen (though a look at the wiki article makes it clear why they were well received). Sixteen cores at a good clock speed sounds great, could mean going back to single socket for the next spin. Good times indeed.

Student life was superb. There's no other time when accidentally burning holes in the carpet can be consequence free. I'm still hoping to land a role in a corporate R&D lab eventually, but until then I've gone into software development. You lose the physical experience of experimentation in exchange for being able to set up a working lab on an off the shelf laptop.

It's really good. Definitely pushes computers to their limit though - I'm writing this while I wait for the current box to finish compiling. How have the last five years or so treated you?

Cheers!
