What does it take to max GTA IV!?

I'm playing GTA IV again on an overclocked 4770k, 8GB DDR3 and a 390X, at max settings including max view distance but no mods or AA and at night my frame rate drops to a stuttery mess of 30 to 40fps (I think the frame times are bad or inconsistent)

In HWMonitor my 8 threads are at 64%-90% utilisation (with Steam, Orgin and a Chrome tab open) whilst my GPU is at 10)% utilisation (although it also says my GPU is running at 1,021,545 volts which is interesting)

Can this hardware seriously not run GTA IV better than this!?

Probably the drawcall or another throughput limit of the older DX API - almost regardless of hardware that becomes a bottleneck.

Just play GTA 5 it runs much better, its a shame really as the story in GTA 4 was decent I thought, had its funny moments with roman and his gambling

I've played GTA V a lot and wanted to go back to IV because I like its darker, slower tone. I like the desaturated colours and cold New York backdrop. I also prefer the more realistic vehicle handling.

Gta iv used to run, now runs and will always run like utter garbage.

Turning down shadows and reflections helps, same with draw distance but it's still bad.

Which is a shame because I much prefer many aspects of it over GTA V.

Well I can't even get mine to launch, just get Securom error 2000.

Haha. Securom. Haven't heard that name in a long time. Still trying to carry on the futile excercise of stopping piracy whilst screwing genuine buyers.

GTA 5 max looks beautiful. But takes serious hardware to run max. I run it maxed at 1440p. Though i tend to like to try 4k when doing story mode. 3770k @ 3.6Ghz and 1080Ti at 2050Mhz

When I last played GTA4 with a 290 & 3770k it was buttery smooth as far as I can remember, even with ENB mods on.

Good times

Dunno about GTA 4 but in some games ENB hooks the graphics engine and can potentially alleviate some of the bottlenecks a little bit i.e. making it possible to use more VRAM, etc.

Looking back over my screenshot slection I also had a range of mods going at one point- I must have been playable on an i7 860 + AMD 7870...

Maybe something to do with patch 8? (also many mods are now broken because of this patch :( )

Always runs better on Nvidia GPUs + Intel Extreme Edition CPU's. I could max it out on a Core i7-965XE + GTX580 about 6-7 years ago! Needs 1.5Gb VRam @ 1360x768 but the higher res the more VRam you need so modern res will need perhaps 8GB VRam min @ 1920x1080.

a console lol....it was a terrible port and it seemed no matter what high end spec you threw at it, it just performed like you were playing it on a potato PC

I did love that game with mods though :) spent so long making it look awesome

Even with a 4790k @ 4.4, 32GB RAM and 2x 1080 Ti's GTA 4 still runs like crap and dips to the 20's even :D

The game ran better on an Athlon 64 x2 4800+ and a 8800 GTX/5870. GTA 4 has gotten worse really the faster my hardware got. GTA 4 must be the worst port ever made, shame as I really like the game. Would be nice if they could one day do a proper update to it.

It's just a rubbish port period - to the point where it won't run no matter how good your hardware is as mentioned with the above specs^. There are some games that just want to be unique...

Always preferred IV over V by a mile. Must have replayed it about 8+ times and have yet to replay 5. The former just had miles better characters overall, a more enjoyable city and better weighted handling. I only ever played it on the 360 though...ran like an absolute dog on my 5ghz rig through 3x GPU upgrades.

I uninstalled after I finished it just like I did with GTA 3. The actual setup of GTA irritates not just performance after a while, it was strange then it had multiplayer but very rarely did I get to play as nobody was on it to start a game or maybe I missed out on custom servers:confused:
Completed all the expansion packs too. When Vega comes out, I'll install one just to see if it suddenly works perfect on that :p I would guess its threaded badly so it throttles itself, maybe its down to some of this AI
