what does linking power limit and temperature limit in afterburner do?

Sure this is straight forward but google searches have not been fruitful!

I think i've maxed my 1080 at ~225Mhz core and +600Mhz memory. I can get stable boost clocks of 2100-2126Mhz.

I currently have power limit at 120% and temp limit at 92 degrees (max) but they are un-linked. Is this correct for max OC where thermals aren't a limiting factor?

Anyone think my card has any left to give? I think it's done well so don't blame it for throwing in the towel!

 
Linking both means the card will limit the maximum voltage point along the boost curve if trying to maintain the temperature target. Depending on the upper thermal limit set, the card may be voltage limited at this point, or if the power target or voltage is set too low, power limited.

Unlinking is the best method.
 
~2.1GHz is the limit for most 1070/1080 Pascal cards short of going to extreme cooling and/or hardware mods, etc. a lot of cards will boost to ~21xxMHz but then at some point hit the powerlimit and drop to 20xxMHz at times so if you are holding around 2100MHz you are doing well.
 
As above the limits are working to keep the card within parameters, depending on the temperature you are most like not throttling to any great deal but check the charts and if you see power limit hit 1 frequently then you are limiting.

Unfortunately the only cure is unlock the voltage slider and set it to 100% (which means allow 100%). The problem you will then have is that the card hits the pascal voltage hard limit in the GPU (it’s probably a little under now) and temps may increase ~10c for no massive gain... which leads you back to throttling because of temp target this time :)

Your cards performing well so just check power limit is not a 1-0 yo-yo and you’re good.

In games (PUBG) as said before it is bumbling along around 2060Mhz but does temporarily make it to 2100Mhz or so.

So my next option is to unlock voltage control and slide it to max?
I've read this is safe and not a true overvolting like on RAM or CPUs?
As I am water-cooled will this help or hinder the card and sustained boost clocks?

Cool I've watched a few vids now and am going to put the voltage slider to 100% and go for my final max overclock see what I get.

Probably not very much.

Pascal cards don't like this sort of thing and if you increase the voltage at all it normally works best with a small percentage increase.
 
Is there any way of knowing what percentage is in the right ball park?
I understand Pascal gpus cannot be thought of in the same way as CPUs and RAM when it comes to extra voltage.
 
You are better off making a custom curve.

Found out mine will do 2000 solid at 975mV which with a reasonable fan profile means I don't go over 53'c and don't even use 100% of power limit let alone 120.

With max fan, voltage and power I still don't get 2000 solid as something is always limiting things and it all gets silly hot.

Pascal is odd like that!
