What does OEM (3 User) actually mean?

It's for Kaspersky internet security in this case, which as I'm considering running windows again might be a good call.

Firstly, if I install it on a dual boot system that has one copy of vista, one of xp, and a second copy of XP running inside a virtualbox, all on one computer, is that all three uses gone, two, or just one?

Secondly, how does this work with reinstallations (of operating system), changing motherboards, changing hard drives and so forth.

I'd love some clarification :)

Cheers

That scenario would require 3 Windows licenses so I can only assume it would be the case for Kaspersky as well.

As far as reinstallation goes, I'm not sure. I don't think it would nescessarily check itself and refuse to install on a different hardware set if that's what you are worried about.

If you really want to stay on side with licenses the 3 user retail is only £15-20 (that's what I paid for it anyway) and you won't have to worry about the OEM aspects.

It all depends on the term of the license - some licenses are tied to MAC addresses, some to IP addresses, some just to the 'computer'.

If its MAC address you could argue that all the VMs are really sharing the one physical MAC address of the host, so thats just 1 license.

Its how you take the EULA I guess :)

I've never heard of a licence being tied to a MAC or IP.

We've got some software at work that is tied to MAC address, custom coded so that may have something to do with it - must admit its not very common at all and a complete pain in the rear when a NIC dies :D

They have moved on a bit in the newer version where we have to use USB dongles to make the application run. I think the company got chuffed off with resetting licenses after the NIC died a few times or we upgraded machines!

Cubase uses dongles and by god is it annoying.

The main differences are in the transferability of the licence and whether installs or concurrent use is the deciding factor on what counts for the use of a licence.

I can't answer as to the technicalities, but fwiw I can tell you that I have a 3x OEM licence for KIS 2009 (from OcUK) and I've installed it about 20 times now lol Not concurrently, but on at least eight different machines and innumerable OS. Kaspersky aren't that bothered, or tight on control, so long as you don't take the mick. Best to check with their licensing dept. to be sure but I can say you won't get any hassle if you need to reinstall or something.

this is something ive always thought about, thinking of getting so i can put on 3 different pc's but same every now and again i do reinstall.
