what does the cf mean on a 5850

Well, i preume cf is an acronym for Crossfire or CrossfireX, so two 5850 GPU's would make cf.

It just means that your card is crossfire compatible. Crossfire is where you use a pair of cards so in your case it would be a 5830/5850/5870 to go with your existing 5850.
Some cards such as the 4870X2, 5970, 6990 have two gpu's on a single card which is effectively crossfire with one card.
