What Does the Next Generation of Gaming Consoles Look Like?

I noticed in there they say about a re-design of the playstation control pad. Personally I don't see the problem with the PS3 pads. I prefer them over the xbox ones. I find the xbox control pads to be far too big for me to hold comfortably for longish periods.

Initially I would agree as I find the PS controllers very comfortable. One thing I recently noticed though, was that whenever I introduce a non console gamer to my PS3 they grip the controller way too tight and find it really uncomfortable. Could it be that we have learn't to adapt our grip on the controller over the years and it's not as 'naturally' ergonomic as we think it is?

This jus goes to show how difficult design, I find the 360 pad the right size for me whereas the ps3 pad is slighty too small for my liking. However I can play with ps3 without any discomfort the 360 pad is more comfortable to use for long periods. I think your right about the 360 pad 'naturally ergonomic' what the reason for this is though I am not sure.

The one thing I do much prefer on the 360 pad though is thumbstick position.

Well the world would be boring if we were all the same.

Reading the full article though I agree with most of the authors wish list for next gen. The one thing I am not sure on is no 3D, while I dont own and ot planning to buy a 3D tv anytime soon. A similar console life could put its EOL into 2020-2022 and who knows how well 3d will work by then.

I agree about the PS3 controller. I much prefer the 360 controller. And this is coming from somebody who owned a PS1 & PS2.
I also agree about Xbox Live Gold. They need to make games free to play online for everybody and then have a subscription service similar to PSN+.

I like both controllers but I find the 360 controller better for games such as 3D platformers and the PS3 controller better for fighting games or 2D platformers.

Game manufactures seem to throw 3D in our faces whenever they run out of ideas every couple of years. Ever since the 8 bit days they have been trying to get 3D gaming in our homes but never succeeded. Even Nintendo has noticed so the Wii U won’t be supporting 3D. I don’t see why it keeps on popping up every 10 years or so then ends up fazed out again because of lack of interest.

3D of the past is hardly comparable to what has been going on in recent years and 3D isn't just going to go away this time, whether you are a fan or not. If I had a 3D TV, I would certainly play games on it in 3D mode, its possibly one of the best uses for the technology. If I buy a new TV in the next few years, its highly likely it will have 3D capability.

Finally, I'd add that saying that:

Even Nintendo has noticed so the Wii U won’t be supporting 3D.

Doesn't really fly because Nintendo has a handheld console that is entirely based around being 3D and even has it in name. Nintendo has embraced 3D technology more than any other manufacturer.

I have seen this reason being given before and I agree that it has been tried before however I can see a possibility that as 3D technology advances then it will become good enough and cheap enough to become the norm. I remember when 3D meant wearing green and red glasses to read a comic, now we are at the point with glassless 3D screens. Now will it be this time of trying that 3D TV’s start being in every home? I don’t know and I would think that Microsoft and Sony have more information on future possibilities (especially Sony as they make TV’s) however if they follow Nintendo and categorically say they wont support 3D then they are betting on that within the consoles life that 3D wont become the norm. If they all decide that they aren’t going to implement it then it rules this discussion moot however if one does and the others don’t then it will be interesting to see how things go. I suppose in conclusion it comes down to - if they include it then the consoles will most probably cost more but just because the feature is there isn’t going to stop you buying it, however if (and it is a big if) 3D does catch on then a console not having it would work in the favour of those consoles that do.

I also think part of the reason for lack of interest in 3D is due to how crap it is done sometimes. Years ago (think 6 or so) I had seen a couple of 3D movies and it was a novelty but wasn’t anything all that, however there was a space documentary film showing at an imax cinema which was being advertised as 3D which I was too interested in however the actual show looked good so went to see it. I came out really impressed with the 3D of that, I don’t know what was different between that and other things I had seen though. I have since seen other films in 3D (not at imax though) and again not been too impressed by it. Now could it be that it doesn’t catch on due to the amount of mediocre 3D showings so people aren’t that interested by it or is just simply people don’t care whether it is 2D or 3D.

I am not saying they should do it or that they shouldn’t but questioning the thought process of saying it shouldn’t be included and depending on your personal view the bravery/stupidity of not including it.

Yes, until they noticed promoting 3D wasn’t taking off due to lack of sales of the 3DS. When the 3DS was in its final testing stage, Nintendo’s requirements for developing on the console was developers HAD make use of the 3D if they was developing for the 3DS. Then they scrapped that requirement a few months back.

Look at the adverts (mostly on TV), advertising the 3DS when it first released last year, promotion its 3D capabilities. Compared to now, the adverts don’t mention anything about its 3D capabilities. Nintendo even admitted they had to do this because 3D wasn’t as big as they hoped it would be. New Super Mario Bros 2 doesn’t make use of any 3D but then again its 2D game anyway.

Slight mistake in what I said before though. Satoru Iwata, didn’t say the Wii U won’t support 3D. He said it will supported 3D but it won’t be the focus of the console like the 3DS was.

Also to add but not sure if true. Sony has cut back on promoting 3D TV’s and it’s no longer their main focus like it was 12/18 months ago. 3D will be standard in Sony TV’s like Freeview HD is now. Sony’s main goal is Smart TV technology and that’s the reason for buying Gaikai. Maybe Sony’s next console will have Smart TV features with the help the Gaikai ownership and be able to stream Playstation games directly to the TV with a console being there.

I prefer the xbox 360 control pads for 3 reasons:
Shape, it feels more natural and more comfortable.
Analog sticks, which just seem more accurate and easy to use for me.
Triggers, which are also more easy to use.

I guess all 3 of those points are just personal preference. I still prefer the buttons and dpad on PS controllers though.

I don't agree with what he said about releasing PS4 'slim and light' when its first released. To do that would just push the cost of the console up or Sonys losses, making it a terrible idea. The only reason they are able to make smaller versions of consoles in the first place is because they are able to use smaller manufacturing processes for the components as they become available, which leads to less power usage which leads to less heat.

Edit: Joebob, your signature file size is too big, its been a while since I've caught someone out as most of the sigs that I think look over 20k in size are just under. Yes, i'm sad :p

I find the PS3 sticks to high/tall for my liking - I think it would be perfect for me if they were lowered slightly. Spotting int BFBC2 is a nightmare for me.

Keep the PS3 controller as it is but make these 2 additions:

1) Make the whole thing about 15% bigger for bigger hands.

2) Make the L2 and R2 buttons have an outward curve so your fingers don't slip off (basically like the XBox 360 triggers).

These have been my pet peeves for God knows how long, hope they sort at least one of them out.

Its each to their own when it comes to control pads tho. For me personally the ps3 control is fine size wise. I will admit the L2 and R2 buttons are crap but with the giotech triggers on its fine so maybe stick them on as standard.

I think my only hate on the PS3 control pad is when you have to use R3 or L3 I bloody hate it and they should take R3 and L3 out of games.

For me games like Fifa I cannot play comfortably at all on an xbox control pad. Then again that might be due to being so used to the PS control pad from the PS1 upwards.

I will also mention that I do not play FPS games on consoles as I simply cannot play them using a control pad. I HAVE to use a mouse and keyboard for FPS games (which is what my laptop is for :) )

It'd be good if they made the pads come in a couple of different sizes. Playstation pads seem better suited for those with smaller hands, 360 ones for those with big hands. I'm pretty sure the sony and nintendo controllers are designed for the asian market, who tend to want things a little smaller. It doesn't seem like that much of a push for them to release different versions for fat handed tw*ts like myself.;)

for me...

PS3 pad is to small, sticks should be positioned like those on 360 as my thumbs occasionally hit when using PS3 pad, it also needs convex tops on the sticks as my thumbs slip while using them. it also needs proper triggers that would get used instead of the bumpers.

360 pad is the best of the bunch and made better with the added weight of the chatpad.

To fix the PS3 pad:

Swap the d-pad and left analogue stick
Analogue back buttons that don't slope away from the finger
Analogue sticks without such a big deadzone

The i'd probably prefer it to the 360 pad.
