Hi

I've got a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, he's 4 months old and I've been feeding him regular dried puppy food made by Pedigree. It's been brought to my attention that the Pedigree range of food is really bad for my dog, it's apparently full of preservatives and all kinds of nasties.

I've been reading up a little on different diets for dogs, some recommend a raw meat diet, some recommend a dried food diet and some recommend a mixture both.

I'm just wondering what kind of diet OcUK's dogs are on? What are peoples views on the various diets available?

Thanks

Awww, pics or he isnt real :D

At that age we fed ours Pedigree puppy pouches, pouches of meat as opposed to dry food. He grew very well and has always had a very, health glossy coat. Hes now nearly 3 and has soft meaty biscuits for breakfast and Butchers tinned meat for his tea. My Dad is a purist and thinks all dogs should be fed on dry meals as the meat contains all sorts of nasties. Its never done my baby any harm. Heres a pic of Rocky...

Ours are fed on mixer from Lidl and meat from countrywide stores..frozen tripe, lamb, chicken and beef...dogs like MEAT...and they eat any leftovers.

Don't be fooled by thinking high price = best, look for Dr. John, Silver, Gold or Platinum. Farm suppliers usually stock them, never seen them in a Pet shop/store, I guess they like the profits on £30+ Bags of food too much ;)

James Wellbeloved has a very good reputation.

We feed ours a raw diet - chicken wings and "dog meat" bags (read: basically offal) from the local farm shop.

Which contains lots of additives and also wheat and cereal.

When I was a lad our dogs used to get a mix of cheap dog biscuits and family leftovers. They used to love all the gristle, leftover gravy and mixed vegetables. Plenty of good nutrition in leftovers and nothing went to waste :)

Feeding your dog stuff like Pedigree is kind of like giving your pet a McDonalds each day.

As has been said you should be feeding it on Eukanuba which is much healthier, more nutritionally balanced and so better for your animal. Also, you'll need feed them less and so it won't cost as much as you think.

Always fed my Bullmastiffs Purina "Beta" usually mixed with some tripe, chicken, beef or dinner leftovers.

Just keep an eye on whats coming out the other end as some pet foods will be too rich for your dog.

Purina Beta for our border collie. Has a very nice coat and good skin.

Ask the vet and they will recommend this, Royal Canin, James Wellbeloved, and a few others.

Ask your vet.

A good mix always works though, dried food a a basis is convenient when it is a high quality brand, left-overs are excellent addition as long as there are no cooked bones. Don't forget things like vegetables - most dogs love cooked vegetables and are very good for a dogs diet. Don't make the food to rich though, anything fatty like left of chips and batter from fried fish should be avoided at all costs.

Mine are fed RAW but JWB, Enbunka(sp?) and Royal Cains are all good dry food.

Same as us, we feed ours on Eukanuba to seems to be one of the best dry foods(if not the best, in my personal opinion). We also add tuna or pilchards once or twice a week to that aswell. He also loves veg, especially carrots.

It is more expensive per bag, but he will need to a lot less than you would by using pedigree etc, which has a lot of fillers. For us it actually worked out a fair bit cheaper buying big bags of Eukanuba than pedigree food, due to the amount of pedigree he was eating. A big bag of Eukanuba lasts him 5-6 weeks, whereas a big bag of pedigree would last 2-3 weeks.

One thing is though, you'll never get an popular consesus on which is the best dog food as everyone likes to think they are giving their dog the best so will always recommend the food they use.

i fed my Jacks Hill's science plan for a couple of years but they've been on the oscar's petfoods equivalent now for two years

Ingredients are virtually identical but the price is better and the dogs like it a lot. They also deliver it to you without delivery charge.

A good complete dry food is great (not some awful Baker's or Pedigree Chum markting gimmic version) because you know they are getting everything they need.
