What double DIN head unit would you go for?

Hi chaps,

Im looking to finally replace the standard HU in my Fabia vRS with a nice double DIN one. The only slight problem i have is not knowing where to start. I know i want to be able to play DVDs/MP3 CD's and (preferably) listen to DAB radio without additional boxes (don't know if this is possible...), and i would also like to go for the biggest screen possible. Oh, and ideally it would be black to match my dash :p

I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction? I have previously used Alpine units and always found them to be top-notch, but am open to any suggestions and recommendations!

Thanks for your help...

Decent selection available (mainly JVC and Kenwood), that have uber screens on them, although i'm yet to see a DAB one. (oh and yes they are available in black ;))

Pioneer Avic-d1, think you can get it in the UK, its basically the Avic X1R in a double din unit and its fantastic, does everything out of the box, DVD Playback / Mp3 CD & DVD / Sat Nav / Dual Zone / Reversing Cam etc.

Worth spending another £50 and getting the Ipod interface and the DAB tuner can be added as well.

Good lord and crikey, i think the Pioneer is a little out of my price range. The second is one i was looking at before, it seems to have everything i need...i also noticed there is a Kenwood for a little bit less, which has reversing cam input, touch screen, etc...i think (for me) its a toss up between:

JVC: KW-AVX706 and the Kenwood: DDX-6027.

Similar prices, similar features...so any opinions or things that anyone knows that should sway me to a certain model? Thanks guys :)

Oh and by the way, does anyone know if these units have removeable fascias? Obviously its going to be a fairly tempting thing to be nicked...

I've got a single DIN JVC and it's really good, a good thing about that double din jvc is that you can stick a load of mp3s on a dvd and it'll read them off the dvd, so thats like 4.5gb of music on one disc, very handy. I don't know if the kenwood does that but the touch screen is a nice feature (my JVC has touch screen :D ) think it's more of a bragging thing though really as you don't really need it. I don't know a lot about kenwoods though, never heard anyone say much about them really.

Don't know what sort of security these double DIN units have as it's not like the screen is going to be detachable and you walk around with it lol. I'd imagine they have a strong cage that holds them in though so someone couldn't just pull it out without the removal tools.

Rightio, thanks guys...and its now a toss up between:

JVC: KW-AVX706,

Kenwood: DDX-6027,

Kenwood: DDX-6029.

If im honest i prefer the look of the Kenwood, but if people seriously recommend JVC over them then i may have to reconsider?

EDIT: The screen is also slightly bigger on the Kenwoods :p :D

EDIT#2: Currently favouring the 6029 unless anyone says otherwise...

I've had two a top of the line kenwood headunit in the past, one cost £400 and the other £459 and this was about 3 years ago, both units turned out to be fantastic, great sound quality & features that put most units to shame even now.

Thanks for your comments guys :)

Shopping list for my Fabia:

1 x Kenwood 6029 double DIN
1 x Bit of plastic from Skoda that fills in a gap that a double din HU leaves
1 x ISO adaptor
1 x Aerial adaptor

And im buying this stuff from caraudiodirect.co.uk as i know they have been around for a while. Final comments? Anything i don't need above? Anything i have forgotten?

Have a look at caraudiosecurity.com too, I've used both companies and they are both very good, prices vary between the 2 sites so best to check both of them. Think caraudiodirect.com gve you free shipping on your first order.

I'll be honest i haven't had a look at the back yet, it may well be the case but caraudiodirect lists an ISO adaptor for my model, i was just assuming that i needed it?

If its a case of swapping the permanent and ignition live i can prob just do that myself and save a tenner. I've installed a few stereos before, just never a double DIN expensive bugger so want to make sure i do everything right!

Didn't know that! I put everything into my basket and it lists £9.99 for shipping, maybe i have to register for an account and it will give me it for free. Would be a nice bonus, but ill have a look on caraudiosecurity.com now...i think they only have the DDX-6027 rather than the 6029 is all.

Installing double din is the same as single really, nowt more to it, the iso adpater isn't anything to do with the perm / switched live, it makes a Manufacture specific harness into the ISO standard which all aftermarket units use, the Perm / Switched live is delt with on the HU makers wires before the ISO plug.

What age is your car etc?
