What driving maps are best?

or use your phone :P , just dont get tricked in to driving in to canals and off piers

Do people still use maps?, I have only used one once about 10 years ago before Sat nav became as common as having a TV.

Even in this day and age i still find maps useful, though the only map i own is an OS map of Western Cumbria :p

I swear by (not at) Philips Navigator atlases
I had a compatriot that used to submit to them and they would give him half a dozen atlas's each revision. He'd flog me one cheap each time.

Sadly he passed away a couple of years ago.
You can see his work by looking at the farm names. He's the one who submitted them.

Your requirements must be fairly unique, why are you needing to reference a large detailed map while already on the move? Studying a wide area large map is something which you would usually do prior to the trip, seems an odd request thats all. :)

Agreed. Large area route navigation I usually do pre-trip. Then I generally use the sat nav for the final, more intricate navigation. Although I do generally have a quick look there on the PC first too.

That being said, on my recent 1100 mile round trip to London Town, I (the wife) could have used a big map just to see where we were in the country rather than the small scales available on the nav unit. Or to see where the next turn off was.

Surely you chaps have had situations where, say, a big trunk road is ruined and you have to work out an alternative and the only alternative are tiny confusing country roads...?

I'll speak for myself only but every satnav i have had in recent times has had a road blocked feature which re-routes around road closures.

Worst case i have been known to bring up google maps on my galaxy mega but rarely would i ever do that.

(30k per annum coverage so im not an occasional driver :))
