what engine oil do you use for your car and how much (also what car)?
I usually use castrol gtx magnetec 10-40w but last time i used comma 10-40w semi sync oil from a local motor store for £10. My car is a mitsubishi carisma 1.6 glxi. It seems to be working fine. I change my oil every 6 months or so.

Whatever brand of 10W40 semi-synthetic my dad's part suppliers have in stock. Last few times it has been CarLube.

It's only in the car for 3000 miles (about 2 months) anyway, so why bother with super-expensive stuff designed to last forever.

Shame if he does because Ive seen him post on every forum going

Yeah, regurgitating stuff he didn't write himself, giving "advice" designed to line his pockets. He seems to recommend high end oils for almost any car.

Ah well.

Super Esters y0 and ester based is the shizzle....

Aye. Sad really because people lap it up like a kitten laps up cream.

Double ester Triple Ester Quadruple Ester - people don't even know what it means but GOD DAMN it sound good.

Esters are a biodegradable base oil, developed from long chain alcohols and tend to react badly with water, only very few are used in Internal combustion engines as an additive for there polar properties.
They are very expensive to make and hard to source, also they have poor seal compatability. As mentioned they were originally developed for gas turbine engines where water ingress is not too much of a problem.

I still can't see how Silkolene claims to be an Ester based Lubricant.

Also most Group 3 base oils now are as good as Group 4 PAO oils. Interestingly PAO base oils are made from raw materials such as Petrol and LPG. Quite how he can claim these are proper synthetics when 'minerals' oils aren't I don't know. They all come from Crude oil no matter what.
