I don't remember the exact name of the game, but feel it was called 'life'.

I think it was some procedural generated game, made by one guy and the graphics were super basic, very rough edge.

I think at the time, the blocks were mostly of the same colour, a kind of darkish purple.

It was first person view.

And from what I can remember, it had something to do with you taking control of an area, and then the world fighting back and growing and changing based on your actions.

Does that ring a bell for anyone? I want to say it was less then 10 years ago, but time flies so much who knows when it would have been about.

Initially thought Spore but first person makes me think Evolve? The monsters levelled up whilst being hunted and was FPS.
Neither. Spore is way too graphically complete. The game was almost detail less, like it had no textures (though that could have been due to how early of a stage it was at).

It was definitely first person too.

It was being talked about as the one to watch. Almost like no man's sky was before it was released. "small team/one guy, created this world and the wya the world evolves based on your actions."
