Anyone remember the days of Zone, some of the best gaming ever. This game was so so good and then seemed to go down hill after 3

This is a new version of the game though isnt it? and not like the old style age of empires 2 ge of kings or conquerors?

Try the Gameranger client, you can find lots of AOE2 games there.

Gameranger is fantastic, have had to use it to play AoE 3 online, also allows Red Alert 2 and other callics to be played online
