I keep hearing about people moaning about the dells anti glare and was wondering what people actually hate about it

Having never properly used a glass screen such as the ACD I can't really compare

Right now I'm watching the tv on the u27 and the sun is beaming in and the anti glare is doing its job (really rather well!) but in the dark what are the negatives? There must be some and id love each to compare the 2 types

The u series being my only IPS ive ever seen in don't know what anti glare takes away

It's days like today I'm very happy with the anti glare, i know how hard it is to see my amoled screen in the sun

Thanks

There are a couple of issues that are related to the use of anti-glare coatings on monitors. People often feel these issues are exacerbated by particularly 'aggressive' coatings such as those used on the U2711H. I would actually like to state at this point that the UltraSharp series is certainly not alone in using aggressive anti-glare coatings and a lot of the issues apply to most 'matte' coated screens to some degree.

- The main purpose of an anti-glare or matte coatings is to assist in the scattering of incident light which could cause bothersome reflections or 'glare' if reflected. This isn't a one way system, however, and the matte coating also affects the light produced by the monitors backlight. This is detrimental to the contrast of the image produced and 'dulls' (reduces the potential vibrancy of) colours. On a broad gamut monitor such as the U2711H operating under its native colour gamut this is more difficult to notice as the range of colours produced allows naturally intense shades to be produced.

- The filter itself produces a visible 'grainy' effect to the image which is particularly noticeable on whites and light colours. This 'grainy effect' can also make text more difficult to read and can affect the overall image sharpness and clarity slightly.

Obviously there are clear advantages to using some sort of matte anti-glare coating - particularly in an office environment where it can be difficult to control the ambient light. A lighter matte coating or what is sometimes referred to as 'semi glossy' is an attractive compromise between full on gloss and full on matte. I know you were using your smartphone as an example but that has nothing to do with the screen type but rather the device type - and actually visibility should be superior to a comparable LCD-screen smartphone under such conditions. OLED monitors are unlikely to have full gloss or heavy anti-glare coatings when they are unleashed upon us and will most likely have a half-way solution. The intitial TV screens using the technology may edge closer towards glossy, however.

Thanks pcm I was hoping you would reply

So it really is a compromise then. My computer room is fairly glarey in summer and right now I have the brightness up to 100 and there's no glare

I really wanted one of the new hazros to compare the glass with the anti glare but the obvious issues made that a no

Maybe the Samsung 850 will be a suitable second monitor that I can replace the u2410 with

Shame dell don't do a cinema version of the u27... I would definitely get that as there's no way im getting an ACD as its apple and expensive

No problem :). I think you made a good choice for your room and I could see a super glossy ACD or similar being quite impractical in there. From what I understand the SA850 (and 24 inch version) will have a light anti-glare coating (considerably lighter than the U2711H) or perhaps even the Samsung UltraClear panel coating. Either of these should be good compromises and I am hoping the monitors themselves will be a worthy replacement for your U2410.

Yes it would definitely be impractical for my primary use one, but as a second or game/tv etc panel would be nice with improved contrast especially as where the u24 sits atm is out of the light completely, and I'm also itching to do a comparison most of the cost of my system is monitors and i feel that's the way it should be

So we eagerly await the 850, still a shame dell don't do one as i doubt the Samsung will have the brilliant dell stand.. yes I love that stand and i love the slightly industrial look
