I don't really play any pc games, but have been more and more tempted to play a flight sim recently. I just don't want to spend loads of money and then realise that I don't really like doing it at all.

Which flight sim you you recommend (a cheap one so I can see if I do enjoy it)?

What controller would you recommend (also cheap)

Thanks for you help guys. :)

Id suggest going onto fileplanet.com making an account and downloading some flight sim demos! :D H.A.W.K i know there was a greta one on the ps3 which also appeared on pc... i forget its name tho..blazing something or other :( or did you mean more realistic sort? Microsoft flight sim x?

Have look at getting Lock On Modern Air Combat. Should be available for next to nothing these days. If you Like it, there is a new version Lock On:- Flaming Cliffs 2 that just came out.

Also, If WW2 is your thing look at getting the original IL2 sturmovik that should be pretty cheap too and has more modern updates should you like it. Edit:- There is also Wings of Prey, very pretty game.

Edit:- For WW1 there is Rise of Flight to try.

For helicopters you could try Black Shark, but be warned it is pretty hardcore.

For Vietnam, you could try the Strikefighters series

Thanks for that guys, what controller would you recommend to use with those games?

I have a Saitek Cyborg 3d Gold just for messing about with a little old but ok if you do not want to spend to much.

Also i have a set of Saitek X52 Pros for serious business :D

I used to be pretty hardcore when it comes to flight sims. But then I woke up one day and realised I wasn't having much fun any more. I think my ageing brain ran out of spare capacity to learn all those flight and weapons systems. :-)

Recently I bought Wings of Prey when it was cheap(er) on Steam, and I really enjoy it. It's softcore enough to be approachable, but hardcore enough (at max realism) to be satisfying to fly. Certainly far more enjoyable than all the versions of IL2 I've bought and never really flown much. And it is absolutely gorgeous on a modern PC. The first time I flew through a cloud I nearly wet myself.

Next time I'll check the canopy's closed before I fly.

There's a demo on Steam. Well worth a look if WW2 lights your candle, or even if it doesn't. You might be pleasantly surprised.

And of course if you decide to get more serious and modern, any of the Eagle Dunamics sims will keep you occupied for... well, years. :-)
