I'm doing up my flat, and flooring is going to be the first major job. However, I have no idea what type I want!

I'd prefer carpet, as I think it's warmer. However, the girlfriend (who'll probably be moving in soon, and this renovation is partly because of that) reckons that I should go for dark wood (or laminate). I have a VERY hairy cat, so laminate would make sense for him...

I have no idea what to choose. I'm assuming carpet is much cheaper but I'm worried it'll make my flat (which is quite cold as it is - bad insulation and leaky windows).

So yea, what should I get? I'll be re-flooring my bedroom and living room but the hall and bathroom are likely to follow.

I'll be installing the laminate myself (read: getting help from a friend who's a labourer).

He's pretty old, so just sleeps nowadays rather than run around all over the place.

I know what you mean about the scuffs, it does look good when it's pristine but I have no idea how hard wearing flooring is. I saw a nice display in IKEA last night which has made me a bit happier about the idea.

To tell you the truth, I don't really mind her decorating. I'm hopeless with decorating, colours, and all that stuff. I just want the best value and something that looks good. It would be the first time I've properly decorated my own home.

I had a light laminate in one house and it was OK I suppose. I would like to get a fair few rugs I think.

It's wood under the carpet, I'd love to insulate this flat but I have no idea where I'd begin and how much it would cost. It's an old tenement flat in Glasgow and as such has no insulation at all!
