Is it necessary to have played Fallout 3 before playing New Vegas? Are the stories related?
No, but it is helpful to have played Fallout 1 and 2 for some background on the Fallout universe.

PS3. I know the PC version has the benefit of mods, but I prefer the relaxed console gaming.
I'll start by getting the 360 version and finishing it on there first. Then when the inevitable Game of the Year version I released with all the future add-ons I'll then get it for the PC as well and mod the hell out of it.
I'm torn between - FO3 and DLC played great on my PC. I didn't bother with mods and haven't gone back it since although it's nice to have the option. However, the sheer length of the game justifies that I'd be more comfortable sitting on the couch. And before you say... "but it's an FPS" - VATS nullifies the need for the accuracy provided by a mouse.
May well end up just playing through the main game on the PS3 and then collect the GotY Platinum version in a year or so...
How is playing on a 360 pad infront of an hdtv @ 1080p native not relaxed?![]()
