Hi guys. I just bought a Freelancer game after playing demo version on the weekend.
Can you recommend any mods for the game?
Thanks :)

play it out of the box for the first game, no mods.. it's pretty cool like that. mods are good but often mess with the balance, as they base the npc's (non-player character, AI) encounters on teams of players v's teams of npc's and so a single ship gets ripped up pretty fast.

before installing any mods, make a backup of the files in the root (i.e. files in "D:\Games\Freelancer\") also both data and exe folders (about 520mb zipped up). then if something messes up while removing a mod, just restore these backups. you'll find pretty much everything freelancer at www.lancersreactor.com, if not you'll find a link to it...

mods to check out at sometime..
Evolutions, Epsilon, HostileUniverse and FlRebalance..
it depends how you want to play though to what mods are usable, some are setup to be played only on their server/s. others are setup to be hosted as multiplayer and do not support singleplayer at all (apart from connecting though the localhost/ip and so playing on your own server). others support singleplayer but with no storyline (like playing online but on your own), a few support storyline but as i say, often there are balance issues or bugs..

Thanks mate.
I probably want to start with just visual mods as the game is pretty dated.

coor there ain't many, the only one i can think of at the mo is Louva-Deus's realspace mod.. this will be fine to use in singleplayer however it's an "opinion mod" if you get what i mean..
http://eoa.seriouszone.com/louvadeus.php#realspace

dated aint bad though.. dated mean's a nice stable fps with full detail and max aa/af.. when you first ever play a game that's a priceless option, i think.

oh, silly me.. get the "Louva-Deus Freelancer S.D.K. 1.3" which can be found at lancersreactor (seems down for me at the mo, the site does sometimes go down from time to time it'll be back soon) and apply that because it fixes quite a few bugs, it's pretty much an unoffical patch and most mods use it.. it's fine for singleplayer use too.

edit: use S.D.K. 1.3 rather than 1.5 as i dont think i've seen a mod use 1.5 yet, mm or perhaps once, maybe?? whatever best to use 1.3 for that reason. just thought i'd explain that incase you found 1.5 on the eoa site.

Is there a mod/patch alowing you to use a joystick/joypad? Could never get the hang of using mouse/keyboard.

no there isn't, but you can find (somewhere) a special proggy that will make the Joystick act as the mouse, which works just as well.

i haven't played FL in yonks. i hope you enjoy the main camp.
