What game to buy..

Basically, i used to play a lot of UT then moved to Tactical Ops, a mod of UT which i spent a few years playing. I think its akin to counter strike the multiplayer online bit.
Ive been out of gaming a while and want to pick up a game thats semi-realistic FPS with an active online following. Heard about BF 2142 but heard its not that good. Just wanted suggestions of good games.

Also whats STALKER about? Is it just a single player game like Half Life?

stlaker is similar to half life in some ways, but its more atmospheric and completely free roaming, meaning its no levels just a big world to explore and do stuff in.
