What games are the most demanding on hardware

As far as newer titles go:

Battlefield 3
Trine 2 Fully Ramped up

Both will give a high end system a run for it's money.

nVidia GTX670/680 or HD7950/7970 from AMD
An Intel i5 or i7 k series chip overclocked.

If I go for brand instaed of self build, would Alienware X51 and Dell XPS One 2710 do the job well? Thanks in advance.

Actually I am just wondering today's hardware capabilities are so stretched that top ranked CPU and GPU might not be needed to run all games. Am I right?

Try Arma 2 or the expansions, that game is a pig to run on max settings with decent FPS.

As above though i5 minimum for 60fps gaming, and agree with the cards suggested.

Not the XPS One, not even a graphics card.

The Alienware is underpowered.

Games vary in requirements. Metro 2033, BF3, Crysis, require some serious power to be maxed. But many games can play on a sub-£100 graphics card and i3 fine (Diablo 3, Batman Arkham Asylum, Dirt 3, Call Of Duty, ...), with varying graphics settings.
