So this xmas I'm going to buy my lad his first game console, he has shown a big interested in me gaming and play's a lot of app's on his android tablet. He has played my PS4 and completed (with a fair amount of help with platform sections) Knack 2 in the past. I thought to start him off with a Switch rather than a PS4, maybe that could come next xmas.

What games are best for a 5.5 year old. He lost his temper time to time with Knack (although loved the fighting bits) and struggled with a Lego game demo. He's pretty much pro at app game's but I don't want to get anything that'll overwhelm him and he just goes back to his tablet. Thinking maybe Mario Odyssey? Open to suggestions as I'm not familiar with the platform

Cheers

My 5 year old is up to 90 hours play time on Odyssey. His also likes Minecraft, Luigis Mansion, Super Smash Bros and Yoshi’s crafted world.

My seven year old boy started out with MarioKart on the WiiU, around age 5.

He's autistic and has only been able to talk for the last couple of years (born with hearing issues) - so the first few months were just learning the controls, "finding somewhere to park", whilst watching the wife and I race...

Over the past two years, he's slowly built confidence (and hand/eye coordination) to where he's playing us on the Switch (MK) and literally mocking us with his skill.

He's played the more recent Lego games (City Undercover, Avengers, Star Wars) to 100% and has really enjoyed Minecraft - although it took him a while to get the point of it.

We got him an Xbone last Christmas and he's recently started playing Fortnite with a few kids from school - Elliott struggles socially (zero filter, no concept of personal space), so he's starting to feel less ostracized when at school, as his Xbox mates have started to understand him.

I've found that Elliott likes games with logical rules and physics - driving games, building games, etc but doesn't seem to get the more abstract concepts - but that's more Autism's "everything is Black or White" rather than a kid-thing.

The most important thing I've discovered - I need to learn whichever game he's playing, because he can talk and talk AND TALK about whatever he's enjoying. Life is a little easier when I know what the hell he's on about...
