What games for my new rig please?

Hi All,

I'm going from a Athlon XP 2800 rig (see sig) to a E6600 conroe build (also see sig), and I'm wondering what games you'd recommend? Specifically anything you would think would make the most of my 8800 GTS :)

I game at 1280 x 1024 at the moment, but wouldn't rule out a higher res monitor in the future.

What sort of games do you like?
 
Many thanks, will do - personal favorite?

First person shooters, real time strategy, rpg's, anything Star Wars (sorry...). Not a great fan of MMORPGs though.
 
Havn't played NFS series, any good? Which is the best in your opinion?

Also, do you use keyboard, controller, or something more involved (force feedback, etc...)
 
I like Most Wanted the best. I use a cheap-o Logitech PS2-style controller I picked up for $8 They make fancier rumbling versions of the same thing.
 
You'll be able to play Quake or HL1 on that rig with no problems at all. Probably nearing max detail on everything (at a push).

Anything else I think would be too much. I'll swap Gfx cards though. I don't mind having a sup par gfx card. You can have my old Voodoo 5 5500!

(I want your rig :( ).

You don't think full settings on HL1 is a bit much? I hope my 8800 GTS can take it. Next you'll be saying I should put on some AA and AF LOL :D :D

Tell you what - if I win the lottery jackpot this week, I'll post you my 8800 GTS - can't say fairer than that.
 
You might have a nice new rig, but there aren't any nice new good games out unfortunately. Been an incredibly stale 18 months for PC gaming =[.

That depends on what types of game you like I guess as we've had some very good games in the last year and a half, for example:

Company of Heroes
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Sid Meier's Railroads!
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade
Flight Simulator X
Medieval 2: Total War
GTR2
Defcon
SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate
Half-Life 2: Episode One
The Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth 2
Star Wars: Empire At War
Psychonauts
City of Villains
X3: Reunion
The Movies
Call of Duty 2
MotoGP 3

Now if you can't find a few from that list I'd be very surprised.
 
Try downloading the EQ2 trial, I know you're not into mmorpgs, but when it was released, the engine was really future proofed, there were a load of graphics options you couldn't even think about turning on and no card available at the time could handle it.

Would be nice to see how it looked and moved with everything maxed.

Excellent - I have heard plenty of people moan about CoH not running fast on their rigs over in the graphics card forum, so I think I'll have to have a go at that. :D

There's loads of games that I haven't played, as it takes me a while to finish one!

Just picked up PREY for a very small amount of money at a well know CD and DVD emporium on the high street with 3 letters in its name ;)

Thanks for the list, that really helps. Got Empire at War for xmas, but have been waiting till the new build to try it out.
