What GPU set up for 120 fps on high settings

Hi all,

I have clearly been reading too many magazines and day dreaming too much, but, well, I am wondering what GPU set up would allow me to run just about any game, BF3, Arma II, Arkham City, new games and old and such with most settings, or all, maxed out?

I would like to max out and get the maximum FPS with my BenQ 2420 monitor. I had been thinking a single card, but after a bit too much reading and stuff, from what I gather, most single cards will max out around 70fps, with the likes of SLI being required or a monster like the GTX-690 to hit 120fps and above?

I am using a TJ08E-B case, so cooling and space are more suited to a single card, and I am tempted to ditch my choice of Maximus Gene V Z77 for a Mini-ITX Z77 with the BitFenix Prodigy. But of course there would be no point if I have to go for two GTX-670's.

Then I also have to consider my PSU wattage, Seasonic X-650, which I do not remember being SLI certified?

Sorry for such a noob query, clearly getting my head in a muddle and lost touch with what current GPU's are capable of.

Cheers.

No dual card set-up will really give you 120 FPS capped. You'll still dip into the 80's/90's in BF3 and probably the same in other games as well.

It's not achievable without dropping basically all the eye candy.

its dont think itspossible to run 120fps constant at max settings?? to many driver/crossfire/sli issues at the moment

Hmmm my min on bf3 is 120 fps on ultra and it goes all the way up to 200 fps.
Never seen it in the 80 and 90s. It's stays locked at 120 with vsync on.

Maybe in Single Player - definitely not in Multiplayer.

If so then you need to run a FRAPS benchmark and play a whole map in the action like you would normally if you weren't benchmarking.

Then the minimums will appear :)

So what GPU/configurations , with the GPU's currently on the market are giving the best frame rates?

From what I remember reading the GTX-670 is only about 10% less in performance than a GTX-680, both of which in an SLI config, equal give or take, the GTX-690.

I have read that in BF3 with 1920x 1200 4xAA, a GTX-590 (78fps) is a little faster than a GTX-680 (72fps). Yet the GTX-690 is capable of 132fps. I guess these are maximums, but what would the minimums be?

Two GTX-670 in SLI come close to the GTX-690, two GTX-680 I guess are as good as if not better, but all may suffer from driver issues?

Will 650w PSU be enough for the above SLI configs, or a GTX-690? In the other ear I am hearing there is no need for anything above a GTX-670 unless you are using multiple monitors, which seems to go against most of the reviews and benchmarks, which again fall short as they seem to have little interest in any benefit when using a 120hz frame rate monitor, and are based on 60hz monitor performance?

I would get a power supply of 750w minimum for 670/680 SLI / 690. I got my 850w purely to go SLI in the future.

I am only using 2 monitors, I only game on my BenQ XL2420T. I'm definitely going to go SLI for the performance increase and higher FPS. Think I'm going to buy in November, then sell them both around February/March to get the latest best card.

Nah sorry that's is how mine runs. I don't play single player at all.
I'll record me playing with fraps running and post it

I'm sorry mate - it just doesn't get 120 FPS constant on 1080p full ultra.

I don't and according to the 3D Mark 11 thread, I have the second fasted 680's on here (behind the mighty MSI Lightning's)

Best frame rates on their own are 7970 Ghz Crossfire and 680 SLI.

From what I remember reading the GTX-670 is only about 10% less in performance than a GTX-680, both of which in an SLI config, equal give or take, the GTX-690.

Probably closer to 5% actually. The 680 SLI is around 5-10% faster than a 690 when overclocked. 670 SLI is very similar to a 690.

I have read that in BF3 with 1920x 1200 4xAA, a GTX-590 (78fps) is a little faster than a GTX-680 (72fps). Yet the GTX-690 is capable of 132fps. I guess these are maximums, but what would the minimums be?

Averages by the looks of it. I would say that with a single 680 overclocked I average between 80 and 90 FPS on most maps.

Two GTX-670 in SLI come close to the GTX-690, two GTX-680 I guess are as good as if not better, but all may suffer from driver issues?

Multi-GPU by its nature is never going to be as robust as single GPU so there is always potential for problems manifesting which aren't there with one GPU. Most issues you read about come from scaling (i.e. the extra performance the extra cards give) and this can be remedied by SLI profiles or CAPS.

Both sides are pretty swift now at getting multi-GPU profiles out to help with scaling.

Will 650w PSU be enough for the above SLI configs, or a GTX-690? A single 670/680 is fine for 120 Hz unless you really want to run close to 120 FPS capped. I can't tell the difference between 80 and 100 so if you can then this may be a consideration.

When running configurations like this, it is really the minimum FPS which becomes the barometer of how it's performing.
