What GPU should I get?

Hello guys!

I have had my computer for a couple months now and have replaced the PSU and GPU (GPU just being temporary) and in need of a new GPU capable of running the new games.

My specifications of late, are as follows:

I7 3770 @ 3.40GHZ
8GB DDR3
2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT610
2TB Hard Drive
500GB SSD
Corsair CX600M (600watts)

I haven't got a budget as of yet. So let's say under £350. I want to be able to play the new Fall Out 4 recommend and above.

P.S Just an extra question, is my computer a good machine overall? I will be upgrading the RAM later.

Nothing wrong with your PC as a whole, Ivy Bridge is still very much capable, especially the i7s. Adding another 2x4gb kit (I assume you have 2x4gb already) would be fine. What card you "need" is dependant on what resolution you are playing..

I'll assume 1080p: For £350, I'd probably get a R9 390 and pocket the £120(-ish), but if you'd like to actually spend £350, you could get a GTX 980*, but I personally think that's a silly card for the price.

* Edit: Just checked OcUK and the cheapest 980 is £380, so I guess not.

Gtx 980 for sure either used or wasn't there a deal on ocuk for an 8 pack edition, actually think that finished last week. But defo the gtx 980 and overclock it too. Yes it's a bit of a high price but it's the best you will get for the money in my view. They run cool and you can always get a very good of overclock out of them. I won't suggest amd I have nothing against them at all but if you like fallout 4 it's going to use nvidia gameworks for some extra graphics settings, which if you want to turn them on you really need a nvidia card.

390 wins hands down realky, keeps up with 980 in some games and saves quite a bit of money overall. Can then put the rest of the money elsewhere or to another upgrade later down the line.

In the end there's no reason to spend more than you have to and the price difference is large despite the performance difference being minimal towards the 980. Still if you're a nvidia fan and must have one of there cards then I'd probably stick with 970 at 1080p or 980 if higher.

390

A 980 is in a really odd price point considering the performance. I can understand paying for a 980 ti or saving cash and grabbing a 390 but a 980 is a bit...

If it was my money i would grab a 390 or go second hand and grab two 290s and a new PSU because yolo.

I don't see any reason to upgrade the RAM, either speed or quantity if its mainly a gaming PC. Ivybridge doesn't seem to get any significant gains from higher speed RAM and it seems silly buying 16gb of ddr3 when by the time you need more than 8gb for gaming then you should be looking at a ddr 4 system.

Also i think OP has a 3770 not a 3770k.

you have seen games which use more than 8gb of RAM when you have had more than 8gb installed. Windows will use spare RAM to cache but there is no game at the moment that will be affected by your system being limited to 8gb of RAM.

Just because your system says it is using it it doesn't mean its actually making use of it ;)

What games have you seen that use >8gb?

Its debatable whether you actually need that much though. I have yet to hear of anyone have issues with 8gb on just gaming windows 10 or not. If i installed 32 or 64gb you can bet the used amount will shoot up despite doing the same tasks.

Advance Warfare, Batman, Hardline used 7.4gb, Shadow of Mordor used 6.5gb.

I have pagefile disable so it mite be to do with that aswell.

But for the price off ddr3 now you may aswell grab another 2x4gb sticks, as once AMD bring out ddr4 aswell, prices will go up.

I've yet to have an issue running 8gb's of drr3, I do plan on getting more I was hoping to hang on until I was buying ddr4 rather than buying now and again next year when I upgrade the cpu.
