I can't afford a top of the range graphics card and as my TFT only supports 1680X1050 I see little point in spending more than I need to.

What would I be looking at to play games at this resolution with AA etc turned on.

The System spec will be:

C2D 2160 clocked to 2.5GHz+
2GB RAM
Gigabyte DS3R

Cheers :)

When it comes to gaming you can never really spend more then you need to. Because what you spend more now means you will have to spend less in the long run in new cards sooner. Of corse there are exceptions such as the Ultra which really is not a worthy upgrade unless you have the spare cash.

If you can afford a GTX id suggest it. Personally id suggest the BFG OC gtx. Otherwize a 640GTS but id still say if you can strech to a GTX its a good upgrade to have.

I'm running an X1900XT 512MB at 1680x1050 and it can handle pretty much anything at full detail.

Depending on your budget theres the x1950pro 512MB at the cheap end. For a bit more you can get either an 8800GTS 320MB or a 2900Pro 512MB.

I had an X1900XT 512MB for some time on 1680x1050 and found it pretty darn fine - even Oblivion was good on it, on the whole, with HDR etc. turned on. The 8800GTX was overkill, certainly great at everything I threw at it though....now 'down-sized' to a 2900XT and - again - this is likely overkill for majority of things. Thing is, though, it is nice to be able to turn everything on and still maintain framerates.....

A GTS 640MB or 2900XT will serve this well....as will a GTX.....but, equally, the X1900XT (512MB) will cope with most stuff too !

Thats the best card for UT3 at 1680x1050, to run at full potential. I know the game specs are not published but as Bioshock and other games use the Unreal3 engine.. Anyone got a rough idea?

Thanks for the info guys. I'll have a look to see if I can stretch to at least a 640MB GTS. I'm currently using a 128MB 9600XT which is OK but has started to struggle a lot recently!

i'm in a similar quandry. i have an Ati X1900 256Mb that seems to have gone faulty. getting corruption everywhere in games. i upgraded the PSU today hoping that would solve the corruption but alas it was still as bad.

i don't do a lot of gaming but when i do i want to be able to play the games at high res with the nice things switched on.

this pretty much makes the GTX a waste for me as i'd not get my money's worth out of it. the X1900XT doesn't seem like much of an upgrade from what i have now. so is my only option the 8800 GTS??

sorry for hijacking the thread - but i hope it stays on topic and Orange Peel the thread starter doesn't mind.

Does anyone have a link to 8800GTS benches using the 320 and 640mb versions at 1680x1050? I want to see if there's much difference

Here's a good link to about 8 games in comparison

Note that in games like GRAW 2 when memory does matter the 320Mb card runs almost half the speed of the 640 Mb card but in 95% of games they are both the same speed.

i just spent a 100 squid on a new PSU suggested by ocuk sales to solve my crashing problem. otherwise i might have been able to afford the GTX.

regardless - i still think the GTX would have been overkill for me at this point. so at least i now i have a psu that i know will power anything i throw at it.

i'll wait for the "this weeks offer" to see if any GTS's are thrown in there. Otherwise i think i'll go for the BFG 8800GTS 640Mb. I quite like the idea of a lifetime guarantee.

If anyone has any other suggestions or feedback on that card then i'd love to hear it.
