they perform pretty much the same, 680 will have slight edge in Nvidia optimized games, 7970 in AMD optimized games.

as a GTX670 owner, if buying now, I'd get HD7970.

I'd lean towards the 7970. It's still a good card the "New" AMD R9 280X is a rebadged 7970 so grab 7970s whilst they are cheaper....note you get a nice choice of free games with the AMD GPUs too ;)
