reason i ask is its up on ebay from someone who openly admits they know nothing about computers for a tenner

so much so they just referred to it "as the bit the monitor plugs into"

I think you might be right.. i remember becuase they where one of the few cards at the time to have DVI.. (only certain brands IIRC..) and the ram was arranged like that.. 4 chips. 2 above 2 beside..
